The Appropriation Committee met with the Standing School Building Committee,
Board of Selectmen, Capital Expense Committee and School Committee at
8:00 P. M. in the School Committees room at the School Administration
building.
Present: The Appropriation Committe:

Raymond L. White, Temp. Sc.
•
• Maurice Shaughnessy and C. Roland Christensen, members of the Appropriation
Committee telephoned the Secretary that they would not be able to attend
• due to previous business engagements.
• The School Building Committee chairman spoke about emergency funds to
continue the study and alternate approach to addition requested to the
High School, Junior High and Elementary School, the trend is 2,400 to
2,700 students for expansion. The School Committee agrees that 2,400
capacity is ample in size. Actural classroom reduction might reduce the
price of addition by $200,000, but by a reduction in pupil capacity
the result will increase the cost per pupil. The average cost) per pupil
of all secondary schools is $2,300 per pupil.
The 2,400 or 2,700 pupil capacity will cover to the year 1966 or 1967
occupation dates.
` There are 2,100 pupils in the expanded High School to date and there will
be 100 seats short in the High School next year with 2,400 seating
-- capacity.
Physical Education plans must be doubled. This Standing School Building
Committee has reduced the size of the Lecture Hall, reluctantly. No •
decision in regards to Library facilities.
The Standing School Building Committee plans to have proposal on school
building for the March Town Meeting and bids on same in September 1962.
The estimates on additions to High School made in June 1961 was based in
square foot area, but the estimate for the March Town Meeting will be
actual figures by a material and labor take off.
The Standing School Building Committee is going to ask for 830,000 for
preliminary plans at the next November Town Meeting. Also they are going
to design the school to accommodate 2,700 pupils. The Committee is to
have two specific designs for 2 ,700 pupils but will be able to reduce to
2,400 pupils and will have that reduction in price if the school building
is to accommodate 2,400 pupils.
The meeting adjourned at 10:25 P. M.
Respectfully submitted,
Raymond L. White
