THE APPROPRIATION COMMITTEE HELD
October 10, 1949 at 7:30 P.M.
The meeting was called to order by Chairman, Howard A. Patterson,
in the Town Accountant' s Office with the following members in attendance:
William M. Hall Emile J. Vadeboncoeur
Robert W. Fawcett Clarence L. Smith
Ralph H. Tucker A. W. Cleveland
Leon ".. Bateman Thomas J. Donnelley, Jr.
Frank D. Walker - Secretary
The minutes of the meeting held September 28, 1949 were accepted
and approved.
Five members are going to the dinner at the Hotel Sheraton on
October 20, 1949.
Letter from Selectmen requesting transfer read as follows :

Lexington, Massachusetts
Dear Mr. Patterson:
The Board of Selectmen has received a request, under date of
Septem)er 26, from the Board of Public Welfare as follows :
"We respectfully request that the s'im of 01,500. be trans-

ferred from the Appropriation Committee Reserve Fund to
the Public Welfare Department for Aid to Dependent Children-
Aid & Expenses.
The sum of 014,000. was appropriated for this type of aid
at the Annual Town Meeting. To date $4,738.32 has been
received, as Federal Reimbursement, with an expected $1,827.72
to be received in November, making a total of $20, 566.04.
Through September 30, 1949 the amount of 015,903.33 will
have been expended, with an approximate amount of $5,925.00
to be spent for the balance of the year. This leaves an
approximate deficit of $1,262. for the balance of the year.
To care for any contingencies which may arise we suggest
that an additional amount of $238. be added to make the
$1,500. requested. "
In accordance with the above letter, the Board of Selectmen
voted to recommend to the Appropriation Committee a transfer
of 01,500. from the Reserve Fund.

It was voted to transfer $1,500. from the Reserve Fund to Aid
Dependent Children - Aid and Expenses.

Bob Fawcett reported on meeting with Chairman of Board of Fire
Engineers.
It was voted to send the following letter to the Board of Fire
Engineers:
"Harold E. Roeder, Chairman October 11, 1949
Board of Fire Engineers
23 Cedar St. ,
Lexington, Massachusetts
Dear Mr. Roeder:
At a meeting of the Appropriation Committee held
October 10, 1949 it is suggested in reference to the
promotion of the men that you might make the promotions
temporary until after the annual meeting in March, at
which time the Appropriation Committee would have no
objections to the added appropriation.

The meeting adjourned to the Selectmen' s Rooms where a joint
meeting with the 'Board of Selectmen, Board. of Health and the Visit-
ing Nurse Association took place.
Reconvened in the Accountant' s Office at 9:25 F.M.
It was voted to write the Board of Selectmen with reference
to the central purchasing of supplies in one of the present •
departments.
Bill Hall gave a very fine report as to the needs of the School
Committee for the next five (5) years.
It was voted to have a meeting next Monday evening at 7:30 F.M.
October 17, 1949, to go over the information for the Capital Outlay
Committee.
The meeting adjourned at 11:00 P. M.
