Meeting of the Appropriation Committee, Saturday, February 15, 1969, 9:00 a.m.
Present: R. Gary, Chairman; J. Blaisdell; R. Blomfield; E. Furash; R. Perry,
Comptroller; R. Souza; D. White; L. Zehner
Selectmen present: R. Cataldo, Chairman; A. Kenney; R. Greeley; L. Cole
M-Schedule changes aecommended by Ap.:propriation Committee discussed.
Town Engineer upgrading recommended because he is independent of the Public
Works Superintendent. Town Engineer has control of his own department; he
acts for the Supt.of Public Works only in case the PWD needs lines and grades;
they can order these when they want them.
Budgets discussed and the following agreed upon:

#1135 $4400 • Selectmen to require justification for trips

#1650 $3950 to agree with Selectmen

Selectmen say that school expense for legal counsel to
negotiate for them would not come out of this Legal Budget.
#2470 $44,700 Agreed Director's salary should be $9,000.
HOLD #2480 Budget for Senior Citizens is for busing. Discuss and vote
HOLD #2500 Disagree on Asst. Treasurer's compensation

in order to carry out an orderly phasing out of this dept.
Town meeting should be provided with this figure if they want
to phase out C.D.

suggests finding out how much wep pay for consultant fees
in 1967, 68, and 69 and compare at the saving in fees
made by adding one]am new man before deciding to add
another.

HOLD #5400 Appropriation figure is $103,750. Selectmen request
at least an additional $$3500 in order to do half
the Mass. Ave. sidewalk.
#5600 $95,000 is for lighting present streets.
$10,000 is for Additional lights. This is for
subdivisions already build. It costs $107. per year
per pole for under ground klieg wired poles;
the cost for the same light on a telephone pole is
$34.40 per year pr pole. Town pays a flat sum
per year per light, not a metered amount. The flat
sum must cover electricity plus amortization cost.
Committeex would like to find out how liuch the assess-
ment on underground wiring is, compare this with
assessment on above ground wiring.

#5850 #47,400 agreed on, including $2000 for water main.
Extending water line would allow them to keep the dump
open while git fighting fires. Closing during fire-
fighting now causes chaos.
