School admin. says s vino in time maLes this worthwhile. Postage meter is used very often, so often that various schools have askef for their own. Various items in the budget were questioned and the following explanations given. p.31 — Science supplies. Per pupil cost is listed the same for ail schools. This is the first year this item has been separated out of the budget and • it is likely to change in future years. At this time they can estimate r„{ amount needed for secondary schools but amount needed for elem schools is uncertain. This is the firs;, year a much more experimental program is to 1-1 be introduced in elementary schools; for example, children will work with earthworms and disect frogs, making supply budget higher. All eleu. school children take science, not all secondary school children do. p.52. New vehicle included in budget is to transport special class children rather than use taxi. There are enough children requiring transportation to make this economical. Audiovisual equipment — possibility of standardization — a wide variety of names and prices are included in budget. Audiovisual specialist answered that it would be unwise to standardize on one type, though they might standardize on two Brands of such equipment. Competitive bidding, to be successful in getting the best price, requires enough leeway in specifications that at least two companies can bid. Various kinds of Polaroid cameras included at the request of schools • -- are mainly used for taking pictures for publicity, public re1atio.:s; some for teaching in High school. Now he asks for remaining money to compleA this project: 4845 for labor in loading trucks 490 for labor to fill containers with water ; 1,335 There are now 45,060 shelters in town, 25,749 of which are stocked. By the end of 1967 he aims at having 32,000 stocked — enough for the population of Lexington. Training is the next major objective. Mone_ in 1966 and. 1967 budgets allow him to hire someone to give courses, for example, medical self—help course to any group i._ town which requests it. imphasis now is on getting information to the pu .lic, and working with town employees. Mr. Let.,ro' s answer to request for his ruling on whether budgets to be read at Ton Meeting should be as recommended b, the department or by Appropriation Coumittee was received from Mr. Gray at the end of this meeting. Mr. Legro reviewed the past policy of the Town, stated that he ' found no law which indicated that what the Town ;.as been doing is wrong' , and gave his advice that the Toru should not change this procedure. He had also given his advice to the Selectmen, in answer to their request for a ruling, with respect to their inserting an Article an kindergartens. following his suggestion, the Selectmen had voted not to insert such an Article. Souza John Carroll came to discuss Public Works budgets. Budget requests as approved by the Selectmen were read; many shored increases due to salary changes by the Salary Advisory Committee. Asst. Supt. of Pub. 'Works is to go to new building. John Cay.oll requests an Administrative Assistant, a new position, mainly to make studies and improve the operation of the Dept. He also reuests two additional clerks, one for near building, one here. Committee suggests one girl and use o1 clerical pool while getting Admin. Asst. , then see what is needed. He would agree to this. Operating budgets were explained by Carroll but not discussed by Committee. Articles were not discussed at all, will be taken up at next meeting with John.
