Sustainable Lexington Committee TOWN CLERK
Minutes of Meeting of February 3, 2022
'l X i1 ,l"O N IVIA
A meeting of the Sustainable Lexington Committee (SLC)was held by Zoom conference. A
quorum of five was present throughout.
Members Present: Cindy Arens, Celis Brisbin, Paul Chernick, Todd Rhodes (vice-chair),
Dan Voss (Chair), Rick Reibstein
Members Absent: Archana Dayalu, Charlie Wyman
Staff Present: None
Other Attendees: Permanent Building Committee members and guests (see PBC
meeting minutes for February 1, 2022)
The meeting was called to order at 5:15 pm. Todd referenced the opening statement requested by
the Town Clerk, and all members present responded that they could hear.
The meeting was a joint meeting with the Permanent Building Committee (PBC) to prepare for a
Select Board meeting on February 71 to present recommendations for the Police Station.
1. The design team (Matt Salad and Jeff McElravy)provided an overview of recent design
changes.
2. Ching Wen Hsiao (New Ecology) reviewed the energy model of the building comparing
a LEED Baseline Model to the Proposed Design.
a. Includes 388,000 kWh/yr Solar PV Production
b. Total Site Energy Use: 1,316,350 kBtu
c. Total Site Energy Use minus Solar PV: -7,506 kBtu
3. Reviewed LEED Lexington list and are currently at 66 points —above the Gold level of
performance.
4. Matt Salad reviewed the Red List—there are a few items yet to resolve.
5. Jeff McElravy provided an overview of solar options and identified that 67,000 kWh
should come from the building rooftop.
6. The results of the meeting were provided to the Select Board in an email on February 7,
the content of that email is provided below:
Select Board members,
On Thursday, February 3, 2022, the Sustainable Lexington Committee (SLC)joined the
Permanent Building Committee (PBC) in a joint meeting to review the Police Station
design plans, which will be presented to the Select Board on Monday (2/7). Separate
Sustainable Lexington Committee Minutes of February 3, 2022
from the votes taken by the PBC, the SLC voted unanimously to support the following
two motions:
1. The Sustainable Lexington Committee recommends approval of the building design
with the PV array electrical and subgrade system and that it be advanced so that it can be
included in the Police Station budget.
2. The Sustainable Lexington Committee recommends that the Police Station building
design proceed into construction documents based on the sustainability design elements
included in the design development materials presented on 3 Feb 2022 at the joint PBC
and SLC meeting.
The PBC recommended that two separate recommendations be made because while the
original project included making the building "solar ready" (like other recent building
projects)the decision to include the design of the solar systems in the scope of the project
was only just made at the last Town Meeting. This approach allows for a solar design that
is part of the overall project, rather than an afterthought.
The first motion indicates the SLC's support for designing the building electrical systems
and subgrade systems (e.g., conduit, foundation locations, etc.)to accomodate sufficient
solar for a net zero building, understanding that the final location and design of the panels
and canopies are yet to be determined and approved.
The second motion indicates the SLC's support for the current status of the building
design with regard to other elements of the Integrated Building and Construction Policy.
The building will be designed to be all electric, the current energy model indicates that
the design will meet the targets in the policy, the HVAC system will include appropriate
levels of air filtration, and, while not complete, the work to remove red-list items from
the design has identified many preferable alternative materials.
Best regards,
Dan Voss, Chair, Sustainable Lexington Committee
Todd Rhodes, Vice-Chair, Sustainable Lexington Committee
Respectfully submitted,
Todd Rhodes
