Room G-15 PRESENT: Donald White, Chairman, Richard Perry, Secretary, John Blaisdell, John Campbell, William Dailey, Peter Hall I . SCHOOL COMMITTEE Present: Superintendent Lawson Patricia Swanson Kenneth Hoffman Jean Gaudet John McInnes The following points were discussed: 1. Chairman White stated he would like to see a "zero" base budget: 2. Mrs. Swanson pointed out that due to the extensive amount of time spent on the Parket School closing issue , the School Committee was not as far along as they would have liked to be with their budget. 3. Dr. Lawson stated that until negotiations are over, they will not know exactly what the increase is going to be. 4. Schools work on a Sept.-June year. 5. $135, 000 out of personal services due to the closing of Parker School - $153,438 reduction of staff -- $300,000 savings. 6. Reduction of 24-25 positions. 7. Athletic budget to decrease $15,000. 8. Substitute Teachers - $20.00 per day. Lexington is lower than most communities - possible raise in salary due here. 12. Crossing guards - $40,000 to be put in budget. 327. I . SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING (Continued) 13. Chairman White questioned the level of staffing in the central office and asked if we could afford this in light of declining student enrollment? Mrs. Swanson replied that the central office was not overstaffed. Dealing with a declining school enrollment is a great job. We have cut back on some school administration people - all elementary assistant principals have been eliminated. 14. No Article in on Capital requests. ,,� 15. Mr. Campbell asked the Superintendent of Schools if he 'Z felt Chapter 766 increases had peaked? He replied "yes" r; I do feel it has. c 16. A request was made re just how many hours do teachers '< teach? 17. $2,240 approximately to educate each pupil. 18. John Blaisdell asked how much MECO cost? Mrs. Swanton ""� `'' replied "this does not cost the town a cent": 19. Mr. Blaisdell asked Mrs. Swanson how she felt re having the Town Meeting later than March and she was in agreement with this but did not feel however that it should be any later than May. II .
