I . SCHOOLS
a. Re meeting held at Clarke Jr. High on February 5, 1977,
Chairman Furash stated he felt it was unwise for him to
speak - the audience was hysterical.
b. From this moment on there will be no opinion of the
Appropriation Committee until we have something in print.
c. Chairman Furash stated that he felt the question of
closing the schools waswhere do you start? It's their
decision to make.
d. Declining school enrollment demands a reduction in the
budget. We want tax reliefs We are educating fewer
students - get the cost down: What we have come up with
is not satisfactory. We have been after them for five
years to cut down and reduce the budget -- as long as it
does not harm the quality of education.
II . RECREATION
a. Tell them how much money then can have.
b. Martin Gilman stated that he feels that this matter should
be put before the Town Manager.
c. Reasons we should go for the new pool:
1. We are being nickeled and dimed on the present pool.
2. The cost can be bonded over a period of years.
d. At this point in time , the Appropriation Committee cannot
see its way clear to support any plan except the pool (over
6-7 years) .
e. Chairman Furash stated that he would like the Board of
Selectmen present its approval to the Town Manager. We cannot
at this time endorse the sequence of events on the chart
except for #1 - Pool. Despite the fiscal crunch we could go
along here because of the bonding.
f. We would suggest that the recreation committee discuss with
the Town Manager ways in which the DPW could help.
g. Tennis Courts - if self-supported could chage the picture.
E. Furash has requested a user-fee report.
h. Playfields - existing personnel could do some work here.
