I . APPROPRIATION COMMITTEE REPORT
It was moved and seconded to have Lexington Press
do the printing of the Appropriation Committee's
Report for 1977.
SO VOTED
II . SCHOOL CLOSINGS
A. Superintendent Lawson has submitted a new 60
page report. It was so stated by the Chairman
that he felt the report was very much to the point.
B. In order to gain some control over school costs, it
is necessary to close schools.
C. Hancock #1 to close in 1977.
D. Estimated Cost savings:
Parker -- $160,000
Monroe -- 160,000 24 mil over 5 years
Adams -- 121,000
Muzzey -- 260,000
E. The time has come when we must do something about the
size of the system. However, there will be no change
in classroom size.
F. Chairman Furash stated he felt the School Committee
needed help. We must take a clear cut look at the
situation. We have been asked by the School Committee to
deal with the declining school enrollment over the past
four years. They have hired a professional and he has
written a report and we should say "great":

G. The following motion was made relative to
school closings:
It was moved and seconded that on the report
of Mr. White that the Superintendent of Schools
has presented a proposal which deals with the
reduction of school costs in the face of declining
enrollment through the closing of schools and other
related matters without impairing the quality of
education in the Lexington School system, the
Appropriation Committee endorses this proposal and
authorizes Mr. White to express this to the School
Committee.

III . LIBRARY
A. No change in budget.
B. Security system cost - $126, 000
C. Over 1,000 books lost over a year.
D. Chairman Furash asked what has happened to the honor
system? —
E. Howard Levingston recommends the library putting system
in but first the library must come to grips with the
situation.
IV. RECREATION
A. Trails - 0
B. Tennis - 0
C . Ballfield - 0
D. Bikepaths - 0
E. Soccer - 0
F. Center Pool - .0
V. PERSONNEL BOARD
A. Neil Chapman has been put back on the above Board.
B. Mr. Perry to ask Board of Selectmen if they would like
some suggestions re additional members for this Board.
Meeting adjourned at 10:30 P.M.
Next meeting is scheduled for Monday, February 7, 1977.
