II , &50 ppiin 1"0 W N C 1.E IFt K Council of Aging Board Meeting Town of Lexington January 5, 2022 L M G1 ON 2:30-3:50 PM Zoom Video Conference Present: Julie-Ann Shapiro, Camille Goodwin, Bonnie Teitleman, Ellen Cameron,John Zhao, Sudhir Jain, Sandra Shaw, Betty Borghesani, Bea Holland Staff: Michelle Kelleher, Melissa Interess John Zhao called the meeting to order at 2:32 PM, took attendance. Public Comments: None Approval of December minutes with one addition of Camille Goodwin's attendance Meeting with Jim Malloy,Town Manager John Zhao described COA activities for seniors, 4 buckets Jim comments: • Praised Hemali and Melissa and recommended that COA go through them for advocacy and budget input; collaborate w/Recreation. • Spoke of the importance of quality of life for seniors, housing, Medicare, the town's wish to keep seniors here, if possible. Described the budget challenges to fund excellent schools vs high taxes; Select Board wants to keep seniors in town • Described challenges of affordable housing - LexHab—6 units in 2 duplexes, $200,000 grant for an affordable housing study, difficulty of competing with private developers, Not in My Backyard (NIMBY) issues, proposed housing above municipal parking areas (Camille noted that this idea had been considered before and ruled out b/c of historic district), public private partnerships, lack of housing director; would like to see senior housing close to center with available services. • Transportation improvement a goal; many options being researched, considered. • Health-new Health director Joanne Belanger working on Covid initiatives, testing, vaccines for seniors, may work on more programs for seniors. • ARPA-American Rescue Plan will ask Select Board for$200,000 to do testing for several weeks, may set aside some time just for seniors; trying to provide home testing kits for employees • RUOK a well person safety check program is being considered for Lexington Staff Reports: Michelle Kelleher, Senior Services Coordinator • Mostly virtual programs, some changed from in person o Lunch and learn 1/11 with Fire Dept 50 registered, wait list o MLK Day of Service 1/17-seniors sign up for help from student Age FriendlV Initiative John Zhao 12/14 meeting update: • Suzie Barry suggested roundtable discussion with Housing Partnership to discuss ideas on how to help seniors remain in homes or downsize • CPAC -Rich McDonough no longer serving since giving up COA Board seat • Johns Hopkins Program home modification program not appropriate for Lexington, too costly • Survey to be done thru Sage on seniors aging in place in the community, barriers • Explore extending Lexpress hours of free rides for seniors Julie Ann Shapiro -Lexington commerce program updates, merchants appreciative New Business Ellen and Julie Ann will interview 6 new candidates for COA Board Liason Reports Transportation-Sudhir Jain- no meeting, no update FCOA- Sudhir Jain- Bright ideas mini grant $3000 ends 3/30; enhance incentives for staff; funded hearing devices for use in library, may want new transportation project; current balance: $23,771; fundraising: $7600 Minuteman Senior Services-Bea Holland-MMSS audit went well, reflects good leadership; new well qualified Board recruits include Sudhir Jain Commission on Disability-Bonnie Teitleman- Susan Barrett presented detailed overview of transportation and there was an additional presentation about the new sculpture in front of Visitor's Center, "Let's See Her". Human Services Committee-Betty Borghesani- Melissa Interess described proposal to end HSC as it has fulfilled its function and Lexington now has a professional Human Services department Recreation Committee Julie Ann Shapiro will check on upcoming agenda and attend if relevant to COA Lexington Housing-Camille Goodwin no update Comprehensive Plan Advisory Committee-Rich McDonough gone, John Z will reach out Vision for Lexington-Jyotsna Kakullavarapu- no update Housing Partnership-John Zhao- no December meeting Mental Health Task Force-Ellen Cameron- no update Lexington Center Committee-Sandra Shaw- construction suspended due to Covid Citizen's Advisory Committee-Ellen Cameron met 12/17 with only 6 people, renamed to Strategic Equity Advisory Team (SEAT) under Martha Duffield, who wants to meet 1:1 with members Next meeting of COA : February 2, 2022 2:30-4PM virtual Submitted by Bonnie Teitleman Imo.
