Storm drains empty into streams, rivers, or other bodies of water, carrying trash and pollutants that harm people, plants, and animals. Communities across the country are installing storm drain markers to help citizens connect their actions with the health of local streams, rivers, and ponds. Lexington’s Watershed Stewardship Program Volunteers from Lexington’s Watershed Stewardship Program are installing storm drain markers across town, starting with Lexington Center. The Watershed Stewardship Program is a partnership between a dedicated citizen volunteer corps and the Town of Lexington’s Conservation & Engineering Divisions focused on improving the health of Lexington’s 21 streams. Watershed Stewards watch streams for problem areas, conduct outreach and educational efforts, and help to improve stormwater management. It starts as two branches, one near Kendall Road and the other near the Old Res, and flows toward Lexington Center. At Vine Brook Road, it enters an underground pipe and flows beneath Lexington Center, crossing Massachusetts Avenue between the Post Office and the Town Office Building. The stream emerges to daylight just northeast of Hayes Lane. The map at the right shows the approximate path of Vine Brook beneath Lexington Center. Water that drains from streets, parking lots, and buildings in Lexington Center enters storm drains that drain directly to Vine Brook. This means that pollutants picked up by run‐off or dumped into storm drains go directly to Vine Brook. Watershed Stewards have partnered with Lexington’s Engineering and Conservation Divisions to install storm drain markers on curbs in Lexington Center to raise public awareness about the connection between storm drains and the health of local streams.
