Willards Woods Next Steps!Willards Woods Next Steps!
The FINALFINAL Willards Woods Ecological Land Management and
Design Plan was approved by the Conservation Commission!
This means:
The plan will be used as a guide for future management (this is NOT a
call to action for each item outlined in the plan)
Staff currently have funding identified for two items: field reclamation
and creation of an engineered design plan for the potential UA trail
and parking
Staff will hire a consultant for field reclamation (work will hopefully
begin in spring 2022)
Staff will hire a consultant for a detailed engineered design plan for a
POTENTIAL UA trail and parking along North Street and Brent Road
(work will hopefully begin in spring 2022). Please note, we only have
identified funding for the plan, not for construction.
All other projects identified in the plan currently do not have
identified funding

The Language of Flowers:The Language of Flowers:
An Introduction to PollinationAn Introduction to Pollination
Ecology withEcology with
Rebecca McMackinRebecca McMackin
Wednesday January 26th 7-8:30 P.M.Wednesday January 26th 7-8:30 P.M.
The vast majority of plants rely on
pollinators to reproduce. From bees, to
butterflies, to birds and bats, these
pollinator partners shaped the
evolution of flowers, giving us so much
of the beauty we appreciate today.
However, these exciting dynamics, in
which a flower’s pollen is carried to a
stigma, are fraught with trickery,
bribery, thievery, and of course,
salacious plant sex. This lecture will
cover the basics of pollination
ecology. Why do plants have flowers?
How did they evolve? And
specifically, what are flowers doing?
Why are they so pretty and smell so
good to us, non-pollinating primates?
By the end of the presentation, you will
be able to “read” flowers and come
to know the true desires of the
organisms you cultivate.

Winter Birding @ Dunback MeadowWinter Birding @ Dunback Meadow
Saturday January 22nd 8:00- 10:00amSaturday January 22nd 8:00- 10:00am
Dunback Meadow offers some of Lexington’s best winter birding
opportunities. We will be looking for our usual winter wood pecker
species, chickadees, titmice, etc., plus the possibilities of
overwintering species not usually resident at this time of the year
including any irruptive winter finch species. Cosponsored with the
Brookline Bird Club. Meet at the Allen Street trail entrance
opposite 23 Allen Street. Heavy rain or snow cancels.
