7. Historical data. Explain the historical/architectural importance of this area.
The Munroe Tavern historic district contains Lexington's oldest surviving structures
(Sanderson House - D-3; Mason House 0--5) both purportedly late 17th century, both
much altered. On April 19, 1775 , Earl Percy's relief force set up headquarters
& a hospital at the Munroe Tavern. Percy deployed cannon on Munroe hill & further
down the road on site of present Muzzey Jr. High School.with which he covered the
retreat of Capt. Smith's regulars. The retreating British burned houses along this
stretch of aid & killed crippled John Raymond as he defended Munroe Tavern having
abandoned his own tavern now site of John Milliken house
This stretch of Mass. Ave. demonstrates Lexington's post. Revolutionary vitality
(John Mulltken House- 09,.1795;-) Nathaniel Muiliken house. D.8, 1799, moved to
present location is 1890's; Sullivan Burbank Tufts house, D-14, 1808; Fitz -Burr
Howland house -D-16, 0..1810; Levi Mead = now 0-17. 1795, with c 1830 addition).
Later houses provide a case -book sampling of 19th & early 20th century vernacular
styles,
