7. Historical data. Explain the historical/architectural importance of this area.
Battle Green, the Town Common of Lexington. Was site of first armed encounter
between Colonial & British troops, April 19, 1775. Area B is one half of Battle
Green Historic District established 1956. This area is primarily residential &
contains 18th century houses existing at time of battle, as well as 19th century
houses and churches. Of particular interest are the Buckman Tavern (B-1) the
Masonic hall (B-2) the Jonathan. Harrington House (B-3) the First Parish Church (B-5)
The old burying ground (B-7) MarrettMuntoe House (B-16) & The Belfry Reproduction.
(B20). Other buildings include good examples of Federal, Greek Revival, Italianate
shingles & Queen Anne styles.
Owners of private property around Green voted in 1917 to restrictive property use
covenant for 99 years. (EW- p. 112)
