LHS Site Council Minutes
May 20th, 2021

Present: Andrew Stephens, Cathy Swan, Walter Richardson, Angela Chang, Karen Griffiths, Kate Riley,
Nancy Shepard, Lyn Yang, Jen Roney, Liz Curtin, Khoi Le, Suzanne Lau, Sam Simon, Erin Barrett

Approved April minutes
We will push Site Council co-chair nominations until September meeting so new members can be
present
Return to School Update
*May 17th return
*about 90% of staff is vaccinated now
*66% of 16-18 years olds are wither fully vaccinated or on their way
*Possibility of having a vaccine clinic at LHS on a few Fridays
*Open campus remains for all students
-no study halls
*Tents are installed and will be used for lunches
*Long block schedule will be adopted for the rest of the year
*2258 students
-717-721 will remain remote
-1541-1562 will return to full time
-there will be a lot more people in the building than we are used to and if will take some
time to get adjust
-we can practice the lunches
*We have to take the number of students we know will be in school and go room by room
to make sure we can do 3 feet separation
-some classes have been relocated
*Hope to finalize classes by Thursday and put it on Aspen so kids know before Monday
*Library is not going to be used as a classroom
- students can use it during free periods
*Drop off/pick up will remain as it has been all year
*Can't hang out in hallways
-go to Commons 1 or 2 or outside
*Masking and hygiene to remain the same as it has been all year
*There will be assigned seats in classes because cohorts are collapsing
*Teachers need to clean desks between classes
-will continue with 10 minute passing period
*Breakfast and Lunch
-breakfast will be served in Commons 1 or 2
-seating will be in those areas or outside
-3 lunches
-trying to cut down on lines
-no panini lines
-order ahead of time
-lunch will be free next year too
-4 stations set up around school to get lunch
-encourage kids to go to town to eat
-go outside
-eat in Commons 1 or 2 or gym
-dots are on ground and benches are set 6 feet apart to mark spaces to eat
-no eating in hallways, stairwells, etc
-Field House will only be used in inclement weather
-we will see how it goes and make adjustments where needed
*Passing time
-10 minutes between classes
-no traffic flow will be bidirectional
-keep to the right
-more than 3 ft of distance between opposing traffic flow
-need to stay 3 ft. Apart
-directional arrows will be on the floor and stairs
-moving outside as much as possible between classes
-kids have been very good about following the masking and arrows
-teachers will be circulating during passing periods to make sure there aren't too
many in the bathrooms
*We have done lots with ventilation so air quality is good
*There will be lots of communication to explain return to everyone
-zoom meetings
-really want to help students adjust who have been remote all year
*Will parking be affected by collapsing cohorts who paid for parking?
*Water fountains are turned off
-kids can bring their own water bottles
*Good idea for teachers to remind students to do QR code when they go to the bathroom
-to help with contact tracing
*Teachers have been asked to do so much this year and they are worried about their
colleagues but excited to see the kids more regularly
*The change in the rhythm of blocks will take some getting used to
-still hyflex model
*Special Ed teacher is worried their students transitioning to full time
-they have been reluctant to engage
*Singing in now allowed to be done inside but need to space apart more than regular
classes
*More is allowed to be done in PE classes too
MCAS Update
*This has been an interesting process
*Last week we had to postpone a class because there were so many kids who needed ore
time
-250-300 kids were not finished
-everyone was very flexible
*Built in more time for this week and made some adjustments
*120 juniors ended up taking the test
*More writing than on previous MCAS
-students didn't realize there was going to be 2 long answers for open response
Graduation and Senior Updates
*We have recorded speeches for virtual ceremony
*Still need many seniors to upload their slide for the virtual ceremony
*Starry Night is moving ahead
*Graduation at Tsongas is moving ahead
Vision of the Graduate
*Assistant Superintendent, Christine Lyons, spearheaded a group to look at graduation
requirements for LHS
*It should not be just about graduation requirements and number of credits
*Pathways- different students can have different pathways
-there are short, medium, and long pathways
-different ways of success
*Flexible Pathways
-dual enrollment
-get college credit while in high school
-expand electives
*SLIFE- Students with Limited or Interrupted Formal Education
-need to address the needs of these kids
*By the end of June, we will look at current graduation requirements and those attached to
Masscore
-time on learning
-we are under time on learning according to state requirement
-study hall and I Block count as time on learning
*Our current graduation requirements exceed the Mass Core requirements in science and
social studies
-it is hard for some kids to meet these requirements
*Biliteracy
-someone who speaks another language at home
-someone who has leaned to be proficient in a language at school
-another pathway
-can be memorialized and put on transcript
*This will be a fundamental and large process to discuss meeting the 990 hours of on time
learning
-will have community input
-nothing is being decided yet
MSBA Update
*2nd MSBA request did not go through
-only gave it to one school
-will resubmit

*NEASC feedback
*Need new building
*Curriculum work
-written and talk curriculum
-vision of the graduate
*SI P
-good to get all of this data and discussion to inform
