HomeMy WebLinkAbout2016-02-03-COA-minMinutes from COA meeting February 3rd 2016 Present: COA Members: Nancy Alder Chair, Camille Goodwin, Harry Mackay, Barbara Rediker, Betty Borghesani, Sophia Ho, Rich McDonough, Marion Kilson, and Ellen Cameron Staff: Sheila Butts, KellyAxtell and Hemali Patel Absent: Charlotte Rogers, Julie Ann Shapiro, and Gerry Howell Meeting was called to order at 2:30pm 1. Public Comments- none 2. Review of January minutes: a change was made and will be made to the minutes that will be filed: removing the wording " Section 8" section regarding housing at Avalon apartment complex. Correction made by Kelly Axtell and motion was voted on regarding correction. 3.Staff Reports: Kelly reported that a nutritionist will be starting on staff in March and will be in full swing in April. (Funded by Dana Home Grant). Live your life well will be on May 12th. 8 topics — talk in the morning and then 20- minute samples of exercises in the afternoon. Topics will cover overall health and wellness. Only spots for 48 participants. Hemali mentioned that the virtual art class went well. Toured the Philadelphia Art Museum- modern art. Cooking Demo by the chef at Wilsons farm had 40 people participating. More people are now on the waitlist for events then when the center was in Muzzey. Chocolate tasting is also full. They have received a one -day liquor license for a wine tasting event in March. Valentines lunch Thursday Feb 11`h is full. Program /trip committee met and brainstormed for 45 minutes and had some good ideas for future local trips. Watertown Theatre — you can purchase a block of tickets and return what the center would not sell/use Shelia: Asked for our input regarding now charging $12 per year for Seniors (60 +) from outside of Lexington using the Community Center. This price has been discussed with the Board of Selectman, but not approved yet. They are starting to hand out Community Center key fobs cards. Other age groups, Youth, families from outside of Lexington will have also charges to use the Community Center. Lexington residents regardless of age are free. The board supported the $12 per year charge to seniors from outside of Lexington. Camille asked about a day pass or visitor pass, these are still in the discussion phase. No fee for the cardio room at this point, but this may change in the future. 3. Meet and Greet: Scheduled for February 18th- Thursday at Community Center Dining Room from 9:30 -1 lam. We need to get the word out and all invited. First % hour is coffee, then 2- minute blurbs about who they are and why they are running. 3 School Committee candidates. A Q and A at the end followed by closing statements. Colonial Times is aware of the event. Lexington Minuteman will also get some information about the event. 4. Nominating Committee: Meeting Wednesday Feb 24th at 3pm at Community Center. Any thoughts about membership and leadership with the board, please share with Ellen, Julie or Nancy via email. 5. Liaison Reports: Harry: Disability Commission is having a meeting Thursday evening regarding issues with the center streetscape. A new architect wants the sideways to be all brick when this is not the best for seniors, strollers, Disabled, low vision to use. Using space outside of police station as a test panel. The cement used had chips buried into the concrete. It was decided to use concrete with brick trim and now this has changed. Safety needs to be the major concern. Safe for tourists, ease of maintenance, and able for all ages to walk (not just seniors) or use a wheelchair safely. Recreation Committee: Julie went to the meeting. Ellen read the update: ADA study in December to look at parking lots to all fields etc. Community Center is very busy. Some youth's programs have been cancelled due to lack of interest. Also Dana Home grant for the wellness program in May. MLK Day. Lunches in the 3 villages were a success. Nancy and Sophia were facilitators at 2 of the villages. Human Services: Betty reported they are very busy with Youth and Family, Veterans etc. They are looking to expand their board if anyone is interested. 6. New Business: Gary spoke from Minuteman Senior Services that the current Executive Director Joan will be retiring in June. She has been working with Minuteman for 33 years and grown $20 Million in budget and programs. There is a transition committee seeking a replacement. For more information there is a job description on their website. 7. COA /HDC will be discussed next month meeting. 8. Rich mentioned Patriots Day on track for the day's celebrations. Opening up more parking at the high school and the Clydesdale horse will be back for the parade. Meeting adjourned 3:34pm. Next Meeting March? Respectfully Submitted, Ellen Cameron 6.
