Minutes, Meeting of January 14, 2016
Attendees: Nancy Sofen, Jewel Kuljian, Gerry Paul, Karen Longeteig, Anne Senning, Chris
Filadoro (Superintendant of Public Grounds, John Frey (Chairman), Jim Wood. Gerry Paul took
his turn as scribe.
1. Minutes of the December 10, 2015 meeting were approved as amended.
2. Tree removal activity – postponed.
3. Final status of Fall 2015 tree planting. Chris reported that all trees have been planted.
4. We agreed to plant 40 large, 20 medium and 10 small trees in the Spring. Anne will send
Jim a list of medium size trees she has identified. A group will meet at the DPW onThursday
Jan 21 at 3:00 to choose all the tree species.
5. Tree inventory
a) Chris has received a bid from David Rines and sent it to procurement. He will identify 2
more potential vendors to bid on the work.
b) Chris will invite Davey Tree to present their system and services to the Committee. The
focus will be on how we can integrate their system with the Town's system. We will invite a
representative from the Town's IT department to attend.
6. The builder at 90-92 Grant Street is waiting for approval from the Conservation Commission.
We have a commitment from the builder to replant a minimum of 25 canopy trees and make
payments to the Tree Fund.
7. Arbor Day - We are looking forward to working with Jane Beswick of the Garden Club to
choose a location and tree species. Chris suggested Lincoln Field as a possibility
8. The two Warrant articles are with Town counsel. Chris will schedule a Public Hearing on the
articles.
9. Nancy reported on progress with the Website. The Committee agreed that it did not have to
review the changes that Nancy makes. Gerry will send Nancy statistics extracted from the Town
annual reports on tree plantings and removals.
11. Gerry reported that the plaque on the Dolberg commemorative tree was reattached with
compression springs to allow for tree growth.
We agreed we should monitor the other commemorative trees to see if other plaques need
attention.
12. Farmers' market tree protection. We agreed we should walk this site in the Spring during a
Farmers' market to look into what else could be done and consider succession plantings
recognizing that it will be difficult to protect these trees.
13. Center Streetscape - John will ask John Livsey to schedule a meeting with the consultants
to discuss trees in the design. A major focus will be ensuring that trees are planting along
Waltham St. from Mass. Ave to Vinebrook Rd. where there are currently no trees.
14. 11 Slocum road tree removals - Gerry will send Chris the name and phone number of the
home owner at 11 Slocum Rd where Town trees were removed without approval.
15. Individuals in the Town of Provincetown are forming a Tree Committee. A copy of our Tree
Management Manual has been sent to them for their use. We offer our congratulations and
express our support for their project.
16. Mass Ave between Percy and Bloomfield. Two set back trees have been planted at Tom
Griffith's house and three at the church. In the Spring, Chris will follow up with the owner of the
house on the corner of Percy Rd and investigate more planting locations at the church.
