HomeMy WebLinkAbout2015-12-02-COA-minMinutes: Lexington COA Board Joint meeting with Friends of the Council on Aging December 2, 2015. Attendees: Nancy Adler, Ellen Cameron, Camille Goodwin, Sophia Ho, Gerry Howell, Marion Kilson, Harry Mackay, Julie Shapiro FCOA representatives: Dan Fenn, Mickey Khazam, Janice Kennedy, Elaine Smith, Shirley Stolz, Staff: Charlotte Rodgers, Kelly Axtell, Sheila Butts Several members of the public attended. The meeting was called to order at 2:45PM. Public comments: None Minutes of November 2015 meeting accepted as amended. Unanimous. Joint meeting: Shirley Stolz, replacing Jane Trudeau, provided a report on what the FCOA is doing. With respect to financial matters, • $6000 provides support for programs and $10,000 helps defray costs of the LexConnect taxi program • The FCOA no longer supports physical activity programs. They are now the responsibility of the Recreation Department. • Fundraising has begun to provide in an effort to respond to the request from the COABoard for a supplement to LexConnect • Regarding expenditures, $62,000 of the capital budget was spent, $25,000 for furniture located in the Mansion at the Community Center. $8,000 was provided from the DANA Home grant. Veterans received $900 for speakers. The website was created to fulfill the need to publicize FCOA work. • The FCOA now deals with funds derived from operations of the Fix -it Shop and the Windowpane Shop. • Two accounts with respective balances of $311,642 and $42,671 generate the interest that is used for support of programs. • The overall balance is "thin" at present. The new fundraising campaign is underway but had a slow start. The OWLL program is a great success and is self - sufficient. Thanks to all involved. Discussion is being held about expansion although there are constraints. The proposals listed in the attachment were discussed and supported. Additional ideas are: • A spring trip to Boston -which was popular previously • Rides to Symphony Hall for rehearsals • Read Sebastian Smee columns and then visit museums discussed • Invite High School Jazz Ensemble • Music and Memory (nonprofit) program or create similar program with intergenerational component that connects with high school students with necessary computer skills • Consult with the Perkins School regarding phone programs Staff reports: Kelly Axtell noted that the Newsletter has been redesigned. She is looking for feedback. Charlotte Rogers discussed the status of the meals program. Liaisons: Harry Mackay passed on a request from the Commission on Disabilities for evaluations of the quality of the facilities provided in Town to aid those with sensory impairments, particularly in vision and hearing. The next meeting will be on January 6, 2016. Respectfully submitted Harry Mackay Clarification of Expenditures regarding the FCOA On capital expenditure for furnishings for mansion at Community Center, of $62,000 total bill. $25,000 was paid with a Dana home foundation grant request written by the FCOA, the reminder from a transfer from trustee funds held by the trustees of public trusts on behalf of the council on aging. Taxes on this large expenditure were saved by using the friends tax exempt status. Balances in trustees of public trusts listed were principal amounts as of November . $311,642 is for Friends of COA and $42, 671 is in Sally and Jack Gardner fund. Interest from these accounts support the programs of the Council on aging. Additionally the friends have been asked to support the taxi program with additional funding of $10,000. Fund raising toward this expenditure stands at $7,000 as of JAnuary 1, 2016. Short of goal by $3,000. The campaign will continue.. Remind people of OWLL registration event January 13 at center 3 -5 pm. Future registrations will be handled by community center staff.
