FCOA is doing.
With respect to financial matters,
• $6000 provides support for programs and $10,000 helps defray costs of the
LexConnect taxi program
• The FCOA no longer supports physical activity programs. They are now the
responsibility of the Recreation Department.
• Fundraising has begun to provide in an effort to respond to the request from
the COABoard for a supplement to LexConnect
• Regarding expenditures, $62,000 of the capital budget was spent, $25,000 for
furniture located in the Mansion at the Community Center. $8,000 was
provided from the DANA Home grant. Veterans received $900 for speakers.
The website was created to fulfill the need to publicize FCOA work.
• The FCOA now deals with funds derived from operations of the Fix -it Shop
and the Windowpane Shop.
• Two accounts with respective balances of $311,642 and $42,671 generate
the interest that is used for support of programs.
• The overall balance is "thin" at present. The new fundraising campaign is
underway but had a slow start.
The OWLL program is a great success and is self - sufficient. Thanks to all involved.
Discussion is being held about expansion although there are constraints.
The proposals listed in the attachment were discussed and supported. Additional
ideas are:
• A spring trip to Boston -which was popular previously
• Rides to Symphony Hall for rehearsals
• Read Sebastian Smee columns and then visit museums discussed
• Invite High School Jazz Ensemble
• Music and Memory (nonprofit) program or create similar program with
intergenerational component that connects with high school students with
necessary computer skills
• Consult with the Perkins School regarding phone programs
Staff reports:
Kelly Axtell noted that the Newsletter has been redesigned. She is looking for

evaluations of the quality of the facilities provided in Town to aid those with sensory

Clarification of Expenditures regarding the FCOA
On capital expenditure for furnishings for mansion at Community Center,
of $62,000 total bill. $25,000 was paid with a Dana home foundation grant request
written by the FCOA, the reminder from a transfer from trustee funds held by the
trustees of public trusts on behalf of the council on aging. Taxes on this large
expenditure were saved by using the friends tax exempt status.
Balances in trustees of public trusts listed were principal amounts as of November .
$311,642 is for Friends of COA and $42, 671 is in Sally and Jack Gardner
fund. Interest from these accounts support the programs of the Council on aging.
Additionally the friends have been asked to support the taxi program with
additional funding of $10,000. Fund raising toward this expenditure stands at
$7,000 as of JAnuary 1, 2016. Short of goal by $3,000. The campaign will continue..
Remind people of OWLL registration event January 13 at center 3 -5 pm. Future
registrations will be handled by community center staff. Information about
programs is on our web site Friends of the COA .org as well as in the newsletter.
Thanks, Shirley Stolz
