NOTES
• Called to order at 7:06 PM
• Previous meeting minutes approved unanimously
• Rapid Recovery & Planning grant won by Arlington, Lexington & Bedford.
Consultant named Peg held a meeting two weeks ago. Their goal is to do
some marketing to attract users to the bike path and to improve the user
experience. Unify and streamline signage to guide people to businesses
near the path. Kevin gave them the report from years ago with kiosk
design. Peg had examples of signage. June 8 will be the next meeting
(public forum) . Present findings from Phase I ("diagnostic" discussions
with Economic Development) and get input from the community. We may or
may not be asked our opinion as a committee. They want to market the
bikeway connecting to other places.
• Lexington Comprehensive Plan ("Lexington Next") June 15 7PM will be Zoom
meeting to gather information. Kevin will push for more protected lanes,
Blue Bikes in Lexington, better bike parking and lanes at the high
school. Omar: we should advocate for whatever it takes to get Silver
rating from LAC. Mark: why not advocate for Gold? The Comprehensive Plan
will be in place for 10 years. We all need to standardize our language
and educate ourselves and the Select Board on the terms and the goals.
Richard: the ultimate goal is safer biking. We need a commitment to this
goal. We need a town government bicycle coordinator. During the early
outreach for the Comprehensive Plan, the bike folks showed up and were
heard. However, there was staff turnover, and now the staff doesn't
remember. The bike folks need to come out and be heard again. Mark:
Somerville has a very clear goal about bike safety "Vision Zero," that
permeates all their materials. Omar: is it OK to say the ultimate goal
is larger numbers of people choosing biking over driving, and safety and
lower stress are means to that goal? And should we develop talking
points and distribute to everyone we know who is interested in biking?
• Kevin: Town will install rapid flashing beacons on Wood St. Town updated
the Hartwell crossing of the bike path.
• Susan: Bike month is almost over. Last night we had info session for
becoming LAC instructor. We will have Smart Cycling in July, which is a
prerequisite. May 28 bus bike rack practice session. Bike rodeo
Saturday, May 22 12:30 - 3:30 for kids K-4 at Community Center.
Discovery Day might happen in early fall. Boston Childrens Hospital will
sponsor bike helmet giveaway for kids aged 5-12. Will do Safe Routes
survey of parents to understand needs.
• Adjourned 8:03 PM.
ACTION ITEMS
1. Omar and Ram will develop talking points for people to use at 6/15
Friends of Lexington Bikeways
The donation letter for the water bottle filler at the Depot will be submitted
at the next Select Board Meeting.
We have enough cash to cover additional bicycling initiatives.
The running group affiliated with CAAL might sponsor a water bubbler in East
lexington.
Annual cleanup went well with 60 volunteers (more than half from CAAL) ,
instead of the normal 10. The cleanup has become mainly pulling garlic
mustard, because trash is not bad, garlic mustard has increased.
