Re: Minutes of September 21, 2015 Meeting
LHS School Site Council Meeting met on September 21, 2015, from 6:15-7:45 PM in the LHS Library
Media Center.
Present: Laura Lasa, Liz Moughty Curtin, Nancy Shepard, Suzanne Lau, Ann Redmon, Walter
Richardson, Katherine Manning, Dave Winninger, Eileen Jay, Sharon Kendall, Elise Rowley, Alex
Mclauglin, Polly Kienle and Elise Santiago. Absent: Kristin Tissera. Meeting started at 6:15 pm.
I.Approval of June 15 minutes: Approved with no corrections.
II.Announcements from Council members
A.Opening weeks of school
Freshman class à First day with Freshmen only went well; school staff wore team shirts
that helped to identify adults who could answer questions.
Senior class à very enthusiastic
2172 students as of Sept 11, 2015
Approximately 100 new summer registrations
New modular classrooms are up and running (Special Education, general education
classroom for science and computer lab for math)
B.Other Announcements
Football games (2 games so far, one home and one away) Ã Reports of poor fan behavior
and inappropriate conduct. Principal Lasa is well aware of these events and the
administration is working with the Superintendent, Athletic Director and police
department to implement a plan to keep the environment safe in the future. The increasing
attendance at sporting events is positive for school spirit; poor sportsmanship and
behavior is not.
The school will partner with the community to promote emotional and physical safety at
school-sponsored events.
Lexington Community Coalition à Youth Initiative meeting on October 7, 2015 7:00 Ã
9:00 pm at St BrigidÈs Church. The community is invited to come together to address
issues concerning the youth and to help set actionable goals and establish plans to achieve
these goals. School Council will be looking at the pros and cons of a competitive culture
as part of the SIP. Council members would like the Coalition to hear directly from the
youth in Lexington and encourages students to attend the meeting.
Health Services Department is starting a new Parent Education series à first talk will be
on ÅSleep in Middle and High SchoolÆ on October 28, 7:00 Ã 8:30 pm at the Lexington
Community Center.
Lexington Health Division will hold a public meeting in ÅTobacco Tactics à How the
tobacco industry targets youthÆ on September 30 7:00 pm at the Lexington
Administration building, Parker room.
III.Meeting Dates and Topics
A.Meeting dates and time for 2015-2016 were approved.
B.Brainstorm topics for the year
Education in health or the community about sexual assault à Do students know what this
looks like? Both genders need education.
Suggested practical improvements to studentÈs lives
à Upgrading the lockers to accommodate backpacks, lunch lockers near the cafeterias;
-Improve clarity of the school announcements (slow down and enunciate, verify
speakers are working);
-Address elevated temperatures in the exposed classrooms at the beginning and end of
the school year.
School safety à update on whatÈs being done
Update on the Honors Chemistry class
C.School Improvement Plan (items for council agendas)
Working committee on how to respond to the removal of X block.
Credit recovery program
Faculty homework discussions and homework expectations for each class
School culture à pros and cons of a competitive culture, peer pressure
IV.FY 17 Budget à Anticipated needs (next budget cycle starts at the beginning of the school year)
A. Technology à more coherent vision is needed on what technology is implemented for the
different grade levels and how it affects the curriculum. What problem is being solved with
technology? How is learning with technology continued from one year to the next?
B.Potentially add an administrative position to help manage the increased enrollment over the
past several years
C.Improve the lunch areas to accommodate more students and the crowding
D.Alleviate teacher responsibilities outside the classroom to address differences in teacher
workloads
V.Readiness and Emergency Management Systems (REMS) Ã tabled until next meeting.
VI.PSATs
Schools only had the option to offer the PSAT on Wednesday, October 14 (no Saturday
option).

Schools were given the option to choose to offer PSATs to 10 and/or 11 grades. Most
thth
schools chose to offer the PSATs to both 10 and 11 grades to expose students to the
new PSAT test.
There will be programs offered to the seniors and freshmen during the PSATs. Students
not taking the PSATs in Grades 10 and 11 will have a study hall to complete work.
