Safe Routes To School is modeled after national and international programs.
Focusing on safety, exercise, and fostering a sense of community, the Lexington
program strives to increase the number of students who walk, bike, bus, or carpool
and decrease the number of cars and idling at our schools.
In Massachusetts, Safe Routes To School is parented thru the Massachusetts
Department of Transportation. Lexington's program is sponsored by local PTAs,
overseen by the Lexington Sidewalk Committee, and works closely with DPW,
Engineering, LPS Transportation, Facilities, and the Planning Board. The program
communicates annually with the Selectmen, School Committee, Superintendent, and
the Police Department.
