We continue to improve our programming with news, political conversation and community events. Our doors are open to individuals, nonprofit organizations and institutions for tours, screenings and community art exhibitions. We continue to create new ways for young people to participate. We offer intensive summer film classes and collaborate with youth groups on special projects throughout the year. We started a journalism program for students at Diamond Middle School and worked with students on the Mock Town Meeting. We continue to expand our presence in the high school with volunteer-produced sports talk shows and technology review shows. We provide internships throughout the summer as well as year-long employment opportunities for co-op students from Middlesex Technical High School. For the fifth year, we have sponsored the LHS Film Festival. In the political arena, we worked with The League of Woman Voters to host their candidate’s night for the November special election. The program was carried live from our studio complete with email questions from the home audience. Working with other media outlets, LexMedia also hosted it’s own political debate for that election. We produced the third edition of “Coffee With the Candidates”, which provides a forum for candidates to present their platforms to the community. We also opened our kitchen studio to cooking shows that reflect the diversity of our community: African cooking, Mandarin cooking, Thai cooking, Indian cooking, Italian cooking, One-Pot cooking, plus Cooking From Scratch with Chef Joe Gatto. It was another big year for technology advances. We upgraded our TelVue broadcast server to High Definition and added HD encoders to all town sites that have remote cameras: SMR, LHS, Cary Library and Hancock Church. We also moved the archive server to Cary Library, which allows us to use the fiber line there to back-up our files and retrieve files. We improved the audio and video monitoring in our master control room, allowing us to monitor the levels of all feeds going to and from the cable providers. I extend my thanks to dedicated LexMedia board and staff, our committed community producers, our enthusiastic volunteers and the many partners and collaborators who make it possible for us to continue to serve Lexington. We have a lot to celebrate and a bright future ahead of us. We look forward to keeping you up to date on our progress. I hope you enjoy the report. “The role that LexMedia plays is really important... there would be no community conversation in a whole number of arenas, including the one I play in. So I think LexMedia is an important First Citizen of Lexington.” State Representative Jay Kaufman Representative Jay Kaufman presenting Proclamation From the State House Training and Membership 4 LexMedia has 500+ members, the majority of them joining during the past seven years when we moved operations to our current Kline Hall location. At that time, the board of directors decided to eliminate membership fees in order to encourage community participation. Our mission is to empower our members by teaching them skills in video production and related computer technology so they may participate in the fields of electronic visual arts and communications. LexMedia is well equipped and is continually upgrading its high-quality digital TV production equipment and facilities. Our training provides our members with the opportunity to learn basic media skills from the LexMedia staff. The graph below shows the number of members trained for the past three years. LexMedia Training FY2013 - FY2015 LexMedia Classes 5 LexMedia Orientation introduces new members to everything they need to know to get started - becoming a member, taking classes, using our equipment, joining a production group, producing TV shows and helping others producer their own. Studio Production 1 is designed to give beginners an overview of the in-studio process for live and live-to-tape TV production. Participants learn the required tasks for each of the crew positions in the studio and the control room and get the chance to operate cameras and audio equipment, as well as graphics equipment and the digital video switcher. They can also learn to be on-camera and to read the teleprompter. Studio Production 2 builds on the skills learned in the basic production class. Participants learn to produce more visually distinctive programs by learning to operate the jib and use the studio lighting grid. Field Production 1 gives members a basic understanding of how to set up and operate our portable camcorders, capture clean audio and use solid-state memory cards. Participants learn the Rule of Thirds as well as basic framing techniques. Field Production 2 participants continue to learn the basic technical skills of field produc-tion including camera operation, lighting, and audio. During this course students receive hands on instruction and the opportunity to work with some of our cameras. At the comple-tion of this class members can sign out our portable gear and start producing programming immediately. Intro To Editing members will receive a complete overview of the editing process. We offer both Adobe CS5 Premier Pro and Final Cut Pro 7 and FCPX classes. You’ll learn how to set up a project, import media, edit in the timeline and export to DVD and mpegs. Panasonic AG HMC-150 Camcorder is an advanced class for existing LexMedia members who have demonstrated advanced production techniques and are ready to go to the next level. Participants learn about all the features and functions of our most advanced camera including the format and edit choices. Robotic Camera/Remote Locations offers members hands on training in the operation of the robotic camera systems at Cary hall, LHS and the Selectmen Meeting Room. Once certi-fied, members can cover events in these rooms. Green Screen Production is a special course for members interested in incorporating vir-tual backgrounds in their productions using the LexMedia green screen. The course covers technical considerations like camera setting, appropriate distance from the green screen, lighting and settings on the digital video switcher. Society of GenealogoistsMassKids and the Enough Abuse Fundraising for FY2015 7 FY2015 was another successful fundraising year. The board set a goal of $11.5K for the year, which we reached and exceeded. The major source of funding continues to be DVD sales and proceeds from our summer kids movie-making class. The graph below shows the total of our fundraising efforts over the past three years. There was one outlier in FY2015, when we raised almost $12K for one for DVD order of archival school committee and town meetings. LexMedia Fundraising FY2013-15 The board has set an $11,500 fundraising target again for FY2016. We plan to place emphasis on studio rental opportunities and are looking to increase the number of special classes and workshop to raise funds. We will also target DVD sales opportunities. Operating Expenses and Budget 8 Operating expenses for FY2015 were $384,771. The bulk of these funds come from the PEG access fees assessed by Comcast, RCN, and Verizon, via the Town’s Communications Advisory Committee. The majority of LexMedia’s funds are spent on salary and benefits for our staff. Most other expenses cover outside subcontractors, occupancy, supplies, and insurance. Other than that, our planned expenses for FY2016 are flat to FY2015 and are anticipated to be flat through the four quarters of the year. We expect that these funds, with the inclusion of LexMedia fundraising proceeds, will be sufficient to provide the services we have contracted to provide for the Town, as well as the additional projected services for FY2016 detailed in this report. Below is the anticipated breakdown of expenses for next year. Operating Budget FY2016 Personnel $255,000 Employee benefits $56,000 Outside Services $27,000 Occupancy $2,700 Studio Expenses $13,000 General & Admin $38,000 Total $391,700 Capital Expenses and Budget 9 LexMedia used $76,286 in capital funds in FY2015. When construction of Cary Hall is complete we will add an HD encoder to that location. The focus of LexMedia plans for capital spending in FY2016 is the purchase of equipment to enable us to broadcast from the new community center. We’re planning to buy another small video switching system plus equipment to allow delivery audio/video over IP. We will also require more field cameras and audio equipment to accommodate the increased need.We will also draw from the Capital Budget to continue a second area of expansion: upgrading and improving our studio productions. As member productions have become more sophisticated, we want to enhance the teleprompter and in-ear monitors to improve communications between the director and “talent” on set. We also plan to spend funds on additional furniture and set pieces, plus repair the pieces already in use. We anticipate using a large portion of our capital funds in FY2017 to replace the studio cameras. The Town has approved LexMedia with $59,084 in capital funds for the purchase of equipment in FY2016 and we’ve carried $27,601 in funds from the capital budget in FY2015. Proposed Capital Budget for FY2016 Community Center $ 22,000 Studio Upgrades $ 24,400 Field Recording Upgrades $ 22,600 Edit Room Upgrades $ 2,000 Facilities Updates $ 2,000 Reserve $ 3,685 Contingency/Other $ 10,000 Total $ 86,685 10 Programming and Highlights 11 LexMedia programming hours are solid. We’ve produced over 800 hours of local original programs: 50% Gov., 30% public and 20% education. In addition, the programs are better in both content and production values. As a result, we were honored with two national awards from the Alliance of Community Media in FY2015. Both shows were member produced: This Mom Needs Help produced by Raquel Leder and Cooking From Scratch with Chef Joe Gatto. Another programming highlight of the past year was, Break The Silence, a show produced in collaboration with Munroe Center for the Arts, the Lauren Dunne Astley Memorial Fund, and REACH Beyond Domestic Violence about stopping dating violence. The League of Woman Voters in Lexington held their Candidate’s Forum in the LexMedia studio Live with 30 people in the audience and questions from the home audience. Working with the other media outlets in town, LexMedia hosted it’s own Candidate Debate for the special election in November. There were a couple of outstanding productions done in partnership with LHS; Distracted Driving was a re-enactment of the aftermath of a car accident, which was realistic and compelling to watch. We established a partnership with the Council on Aging to produce their lecture series, which serves the senior members of the community. Another highlight for the year was the member-produced historical documentary on St Nicholas’ Greek Orthodox ChurchBy far, our most popular program of the year was Live From the Senior Prom Red Carpet, where students had the opportunity to strut their stuff on the Red Carpet during the Senior Prom reception at the high school. It’s also worth noting that LexMedia’s coverage of Town Meeting went off without a hitch in its temporary location at LHS, even though additional cameras and staffing was necessary this year. PublicLexMedia Public Channel (RCN 3, Comcast 8 Verizon 35) features programming by our members, often using LexMedia equipment and studio facilities. We also air programs sponsored by Lexington residents from other public access channels and independent producers and a few distributed via satellite, such as Democracy Now and Classic Arts Showcase. The charts below show the number of programming hours for FY2013-15. Programming Hours LPTV FY2013-15 Programming Hours 12 EducationOur Education Channel (RCN13, Comcast 9 Verizon 36) features educational programs, shows produced by local students and program made about them by fellow members. We also count education programs for learners of every generation on this channel including programs sponsored by the council on aging and the many lectures and classes presented at Cary library. We saw an increase in programs on the education channel in FY2015 due in part to the new broadcast facilities in the large meeting room at the library. Programming Hours(continued) 13 Programming Hours LETV FY2013-15 GovernmentOur Government Channel (RCN15, Comcast 99, Verizon 37) features programming by and information about town governmental bodies, agencies and committees including: the Board of Selectmen, the School Committee, and Town Meeting. There were 47 downloads in FY2015 before it was suspended in December 2014. There was a total of 853 downloads over the lifetime of the app. We currently do not have any plans to reactivate it. Next year we project to produce roughly 800 hours of oringial local programming; 50% government, 30% public, and 20% education. We anticipate adding some programs from the new community center and reducing the number of shows we are currently taking from other access centers.Drawing on our success in contributing feature stories to the regional news show, Local Focus, we plan to increase our reporting of local stories. We’re also planning to record some anchor segments of the show in the LexMedia studio with LexMedia talent in the anchor chair. “Local Focus” has become a platform for us to produce news without adding staff. As the focus to news/feature production shifts in our operations we anticipate offering new and more advanced training classes to our members interested in news production. The change in Lexington School Superintendent looks to provide another opportunity for LexMedia to increase collaborative productions with the high school and middle schools. The new superintendent is very interested in becoming involved with LexMedia and we hope that she will become an advocate for more students to take advantage of the equipment and facilities we have to offer. We are also holding out hope that the superintendent herself will want to host regular programs on our channels. When Cary Hall reopens with improved audio/video facilities we anticipate that we will work with Spectacle Management to cover some of their Performing Arts Series. The Lexington Community Center is also a promising source of new program opportunity for LexMedia. As mentioned in this report, we are planning to purchase equipment that will allow us to originate programs from the center. We are also in talks with the center director about offering some of our training classes in that locationThe other new initiative we have planned for next year is moving our course workshops and equipment reservation system to our website. This is a massive undertaking that requires us to migrate all our membership information and inventory to a new software system. The benefits will be huge, as it will centralize all of our records and reservations. It should also make access to LexMedia equipment and resources more user-friendly.As always, we are looking for ways to improve our service to the community.
