MEMORANDUM
#0310
TO: Leo McSweeney, Chairman
Board of Selectmen
FROM: Eric Zanin
Chairman Traffic Safety Advisory Committee
MEEETING DATE: December 1, 2003
SUBJECT: TSAC Minutes from August.13, 2003
The Traffic Safety Advisory Committee met on August 13, 2003 the following are the minutes
and recommendations.
Request: "Go Slow Children" sign between #5 and #7 White Pine Lane.
By: Eric Brynjolfsson & Martha Pavlakis
6 White Pine Lane
Lexington, MA 02420
Supporting Arguments: Street gets a lot of traffic perhaps because businesses are run out of
homes. Children plan on or near the relatively flat part of the street which can not be seen.
TSAC Recommendation: No action.
Supporting Arguments: To maximize the effectiveness of signs their use should be limited to
indicate conditions not already apparent to motorists. White pine lane .is a 14 house cul -de -sac
and TSAC believed that the vast majority of motorists using the street are aware of the children
living in the neighborhood. TSAC does not believe that any signage could make it safe for
children playing in the street.
Request: "Blind Driveway" sign at #25 Whipple Road
By: ~ Raymond & Joanne Dougan
25 Whipple Road
Lexington, MA 02420
Supporting Arguments: The street receives a lot of "cut through" traffic. The curve prevents
drivers coming up from Whipple Road from seeing driveway.
TSAC Recommendation:. Install "Blind Driveway" sign at #25 Whipple Road.
Request: "No Right Turn" Lowell St. and Woburn St.
By: Marjorie Modoono
285 Woburn Street
Lexington, MA 02420
Background: Ms. Modoono has a difficult time crossing the street at the intersection of Woburn
and Lowell because of the failure of vehicles to stop and yield to pedestrians prior to taking a
right on red. At least once she was nearly hit because of this failure. She has also requested that
the Massachusetts Highway Department (which has jurisdiction) install an audible traffic signal
at this intersection. MHD will not install an audible signal unless a No Turn on Red regulation is
in place and they will not implement a No Turn on Red regulation unless it is requested by the
town.
TSAC Recommendation: Because of the congestion at this intersection, TSAC recommends that
the impact of the No Turn on Red regulation on traffic flow be computer simulated and evaluated
before recommending it. Continue meeting pending evaluation of impact on intersection queue.
Request: Address "dangerous" intersection of Hancock St. at Coolidge Ave.
By: Jacob & Pearl Katz
Winchester, MA
Irwin Mesch
81 Hancock Street
Lexington, MA 02420
Background: Mrs. Pearl Katz was involved in a traffic accident at this intersection while
attempting to cross Hancock Street on Coolidge Avenue. Mr. Mesch and his family have
difficulty crossing Hancock Street and getting out of their driveway.
TSAC Recommendation: Place road tubes continue meeting pending analysis of accident data.
Request: .Crosswalk on Worthen Road at Skate Park
By: Robert McConnell
11 Vine Brook Road
Lexington, MA 02420
