MEMORANDUM
#0310
TO: Jeanne Krieger, Chairman
Board of Selectmen
FROM: David T. Carbonneau, P.E.,
Traffic Safety Advisory Committee
DATE: 5/20/2002
SUBJECT: TSAC Meeting 2/6/2002
The Traffic Safety Advisory Committee met on February 6, 2002 to discuss the following issues
brought before us:
Lincoln Street, Hastings Park The Committee met with members of the Lincoln Street
Hastings Park neighborhood to discuss No Parking regulations and crosswalk locations in the
area. No conclusions were reached but several good proposals were raised. The hearing was
continued until June 4th.
Solomon Pierce Road Speed Hump The Committee met with Bob Huebscher of number 52
Solomon Pierce Road regarding his request for a speed hump near his home on Solomon Pierce
Road similar to the one installed on Middleby Road. The Committee informed Mr. Huebscher
that the TSAC was taking the following approach with respect to the speed humps. 1)Formerly
evaluate the installation on Middleby Road; 2)1f the Middleby Road installation receives a
favorable evaluation, develop criteria to recommend to the Selectmen that would govern
installation on other streets in Lexington. Solomon Pierce Road would then be evaluated in the
context of this criteria. The TSAC will meet to discuss the installation on Middleby Road on
June 4th and if favorable and will discuss potential criteria on Monday July 8th at 9:00 AM.
Fallen Rd. Locust St. Intersection The TSAC met to discuss a request from Nancy Nolan at
200 Follen Road regarding the intersection at Follen Road and Locust Street. Ms. Nolan has
witnessed several serious accidents caused by vehicles running the Stop sign at Locust. She
requested the intersection be evaluated to improve site distance and make the Stop sign more
visible. The TSAC recommends that the Stop sign be moved to a more conspicuous location and
that vegetation be trimmed in front of 213 and 214 Follen Road.
Hancock Street at Adams The TSAC met to discuss a request from Mrs. Tim Wright to install
signage to help slow down vehicles bearing right on to Adams from Hancock. Mrs. Wright has
witnessed several accidents at this location. The situation is particularly problematic for Mrs.
Write and her guests that have to slow down to enter her driveway which is just past the curve on
to Adams. The TSAC did not see an easy solution to this problem. We recommend a Driveway
Ahead in front of #55B sign to encourage vehicles to proceed more cautiously around the bend.
Paul Revere Road at Cedar Street. The TSAC met to discuss the intersection of Paul Revere
and Cedar Street at the request of Mr. John Henry of C. &W. Transportation. This intersection
suffers from poor sight distance particularly at the Paul Revere Road approach. To improve
sight lines the TSAC recommends that the Stop line for the Paul Revere approach be moved as
far as possible into the intersection and the vegetation be trimmed in front of #77 Paul Revere
and #56 Cedar. If these measures do not adequately address the problem the TSAC will consider
recommending a Stop sign on Cedar Street.
