Carbonneau, P.E., Traffic Safety Advisory Committee DATE: 4/3/03 SUBJECT: TSAC Minutes from April 2, 2003 The Traffic Safety Advisory Committee met on April 2, 2003 to discuss the following issues brought before us: Child Safety Signage on Partridge Road Elizabeth Harvey presented a petition signed by 47 neighbors in support of child safety signage on Partridge Road. Ms. Harvey explained that the curvature of the road, increased traffic due to the presence of a community swimming pool, and many youngsters in this neighborhood create concerns for safety. Recommendation: “ Posting ofChildren/Slow” signsin both directions on Partridge Road approaching the curved section of road near the Paint Rock Community Pool. Banning Trucks on Walnut Street (continued from March 5, 2003) David Carbonneau distributed a list of Lexington streets with a width of 18 feet or less. Mr. Carbonneau clarified that Walnut Street is such a street with several sections in the 16-foot range. With a street clearance standard of 21 feet for truck and auto travel, Walnut Street is problematic. Unlike most other 18 feet or less Lexington streets, Walnut carries a heavy volume of traffic. Thomas DeNoto, a Concord Street resident and representative of the South Lexington Civic Association, commented that lack of road shoulders on Walnut Street was an added hazard. A member of the audience noted that Belmont is holding neighborhood meetings regarding speed reduction on Trapelo Road. Greater coordination among towns on traffic issues was encouraged. Recommendation: Given the existing State truck exclusion on Concord Avenue from Pleasant to Spring Streets, trucks are presently banned from entering Walnut Street in Lexington. David Carbonneau will contact Waltham to discuss cooperation in posting truck exclusion signs from Waltham at Trapelo Road. Transportation Options Day Gail Wagner, Transportation Services Coordinator, presented the concept of an awareness day scheduled for May 15 to foster alternatives to private auto travel. TSAC will join the Bicycle Advisory Committee and Transportation Advisory Committee as sponsors of this event. Dist: Richard J. White; Town Manager, William Hadley; DPW Director; Peter Chalpin; Town Engineer; Gail Wagner Transportation Services Coordinator.
