A.teach math based on MA Curriculum Framework, has standards which teachers
teach K-12
1.2011 shifted to this standards basis (as seen on report cards too)
2.example of ÅWhich # does not belong Ä 15,2,8,13,16
3.the mat dept at Bridge plus Karen Tripoli (Math Dept head K-5) came up with
groupings to make accessible to teachers, then on particular unit came up
with road map to teach the standards (what are they, where do we go to get
the information, how do we teach the students)
4.report cards are on line (LPS website)
5.also K-5 benchmarks are on line
6.continuum, ie for fractions
a)1st grade divide in 1/2 and 1/4
b)2nd grade 1/2, 1/3, 1/4
c)3rd grade, look at wholes, comparing fractions
d)4th add/subtract with similar denominators
e)5th models, explain thoughts of comparing and manipulating fractions
f)6th grade standards in book as well, do everything plus multiply/divide,
show visual models

A.assess students as a whole group 3 times/year

a)can see continuum and use for teacher grading, and to lead them to next
level; also on a rubric for teachers; students also have in their own
language to help with their writing

B.do review report cards, can track across time, passed grade to grade
C.donÈt have to master every thing at each grade, it can come later
Parent Questions:
want kids to read 95% or above accuracy and that is an independent text for that child
for reading books at the right level is practice, but then can push beyond a little better
levels are a teaching tool, not for parents to seek out books at that level
parentsÈ job is to encourage loving to read
math does have same structure year to year, asking about literacy have similar
teach through a process approach, small group/individual sessions and practice in
ÅworkshopsÆ
how to communicate to parents that the child who used to be very high is not there as a
ÅPÆ now in the middle of the year
kids are all over the place in progress, attainment
the report card is very speciÐc and more fact based
is based on end-of-year and not expected to be mastered part way through year
will be an ongoing communication as new families moving into the district
when made transition, had meetings and information for parents
teachers have gotten together to say what a P or M looks like, so teachers grade siilarly/
standardized
How to help parents know how to better help their child(ren), understand what to do at
home, how do I help my student at home?Æ
will be addressing it more for next year, Meg has a plan that is in process
there are resources on line about the common core, FAQs include Å
district-wide parent night about emergency management training, called ÅAliceÆ MARCH
