Present: Laura Lasa, Liz Moughty Curtin, Nancy Shepard, Polly Kienle, Suzanne Lau, Nanying Bian, Paul Breitenfield, Kristin Tissera, Kim Effron and Eileen Jay. Absent: Ann Redmon, Walter Richardson, Dave Winninger, Katherine Manning, Elise Santiago. I.March 16, 2015 meeting minutes approved. II.Announcements from Council members A.Report on the recent Site Council Roundtable meeting SBSC Roundtable on March 18, 2015 included speakers Len Swanton on Professional Learning, Carol Pilarski on Supervision and Evaluation and Tom Plati on Technology. Question for School Councils from the roundtable: Parent and student feedback on how technology is experienced at home. This generated more questions in School Council: What is the impact on home life? What access to the Internet are students expected to have to do homework? What are the district guidelines? Next meeting of the SBSC Roundtable on April 15, 2015 on preparation of the School Improvement Plan. B.Other announcements/questions The School Committee sets athletic team fees; the District business office has details on how the fees are used. They are typically used for bus transportation and officials. American Pride Dance on April 10: 60 students in attendance and ended earlier than scheduled. Parent Academy on March 28: the event was well attended, the speakers were interesting and the hope is that this event will be repeated. Parent à Teen Dialogue at Cary Library on April 12: This was well done. The discussion was very open and illuminating. AP classes in course selection: Generally, the number of AP class requests is similar to last year. The current enrollment for the new Honors Chemistry is 104 students. The number of requests for AP Chemistry, Biology and Economics decreased, while the requests for AP Psychology, US History and Computer Science increased. Individual student meetings with Guidance Counselors were very positively received. III.2015-2016 School Improvement Plan A.Continued development The SIP is due to Dr. Ash on May 7 The SIP includes an Academic Goal 1, Wellness Goal 2, and School Culture Goal 3 The School Improvement Plan provides an overall view of the schoolÈs focus. Academic Goal 1, School Council input: 1.Move towards Standards Based Learning grading system. 2.Include executive functioning skill development to match expectations at LHS. 3.Provide consistent assessments across courses. 4.Homework: look at feedback from this yearÈs faculty discussions and what can be implemented to improve homework practices at school and home. 5.Incorporate FLEX blocks into the weekly schedule. Wellness Goal 2, School Council input: 1.Implement Grade-level self-advocacy targets: define verbal, written advocacy and coping skills. 2.Develop online credit recovery options. School Culture Goal 3, School Council input: 1.Develop a culture of positive expectations and recognition of positive contributions to school and community life. 2.Hold discussion on the competitive atmosphere at LHS and its effect on the school culture and climate.
