LHS School Site Council Meeting met on June 16, 2014, from 6:15-7:45 PM in the Library Media

Center. The minutes were approved at the September 22 meeting.
Attendance: Laura Lasa, Bob Ruxin, Nancy, Eileen, Suzanne Lau, Ann Redmon, Katherine Murphy,
Dave Wininger, Kim Effron, Walter Richardson, Polly Kienle, Kristin Tissera, Liz Curtin, Nanying
Bian, Nancy Shepard, Jill Smilow, Eileen Jay
Absent: Paul Breitenfeld
I. May 19 minutes approved. 6:15
II. Announcements from Council members 6:20
A.Retirements announced (faculty and staff)
B.School Council roundtable initiative
-meets 1x per month; trainings are helpful; draft schedule and agenda distributed
-cross talk among district Site Councils
- LHS members who attend will work topics through the high school
council agendas
C.Graduation went well
D.5 METCO Scholarships provided from funds raised by the scholarship
committee
III. Welcome and Thank You 6:40
A. Thank out-going council members Bob Ruxin and Jessica Zhu
B. Welcome new council member Polly Kienle
C. Suzanne Lau appointed as co-chair for 14-15; Kim Effron willing to step in
if help is needed in this capacity
IV. New Business
A. Aspen Portal: Clarify available attendance information
-Attendance information is provided in real time; the verification sheets
given to students in homeroom 2x per quarter are not sent home or
posted on the portal
-Laura will look into the possibility of verification forms being
available; for now, students are expected to communicate this
information to parents/guardians
-Consider developing a glossary for parents to assist with Aspen use
-Clarified Dean Appeal: first level of appeal (excused absences only)
-Clarified Committee Appeal: second level of appeal (includes
unexcused absences and/or the first appeal was not granted by Dean)
-Reminder to parents to review the appeal process outlined in the
Student Parent Handbook
B. Credit for outside Courses
-Credit is not given for outsides courses to advance cluster or graduation requirements
(make-up credits only)
-Credit is not given for outside courses not offered by the high school
-Need to maintain equity and fairness in terms of cost and access
C. Semester Abroad
-Students who attenda semester abroad withdraw from the high school and re-enter; transfer
credits are awarded as determined by the Assistant Director of K-12 Guidance
D. Parent Conferences
-Moved to earlier in the year for 14-15 (December 1)
E. LEF Community Grant
-Continuing to emphasize Digital Citizenship; will be a focus in 2014-2015
V. Old Business
A. Science Curriculum Review: Address questions
-Concern expressed again about the order of the science courses
-Concern expressed again about the need for a level between CP1 and AP
-Several council members expressed: there are students who are passionate about science
and there needs are not being met
-Dr. Crowe is working with the science department on the concerns (summer workshop);
Laura will report back to the council in the fall
