Minutes of Meeting of October 24, 2014
A meeting of the Ad hoc Community Center Advisory Committee Interiors Group was held on
Friday, October 24, 2014 at 1:00 PM in the 2nd Floor Training Room of the S. Hadley Public
Services Building, 201 Bedford St.
Members Present: Florence Koplow, Chair; Laura Hussong, Pat Goddard (Director of Public
Facilities), Mark Barrett (Department of Public Facilities), Laurie Lucibello (Department of Public
Facilities), Lynne Klemmer (Lexington Council for the Arts), Cristina Burwell (Lexington Council
for the Arts)
Members Absent: Leslie Zales
Also present: Betty Borghesani, CCAC
Meeting called to order at 1:00 PM.
Existing Furnishings
Staff has evaluated what we already have, and has arranged it within the building (mostly in offices).
New Furnishings
Discussion of importance of making the beautiful but serious building look warm, inviting, and fun.
Florence felt that it is very difficult for those whose expertise is not design to select appropriate
pieces of furniture to accomplish this, and she feels the space needs a cohesive design created by
architects and/or designers who are schooled in this field. Pat Goddard explained that both SBA and
the furniture dealers have interior designers who can help with the furniture design that will be what
we want. Members would like to see what suggestions the architects/designers have before making a
recommendation.
Use of interior space
Discussion of how to orient people within the building. Florence suggested that the building is
confusing with many corridors. It could be very helpful if we can think of something so that visitors
can quickly identify where they are going, something that would not involve construction or much
cost. This would be another question for the architect/designer. Pat reminded us that we have
wayfinding signs as part of the bid documents. He suggested that we wait until the building is in
operation to see if additional cues are needed.
Minutes:
The minutes of the April 11, 2014 and May 13, 2014 meetings were approved unanimously by the
only member in attendance at both those meetings and today's meeting. (Florence) Florence will
confirm with Town Clerk that this is permissible.
Motions
To hire an SBA architect and/or interior designer to create a proposal for a cohesive design for the
furniture and color selection for the Community Center entrance. (Florence, Laura) Passes.
Lexington Council for the Arts (LCA):
Discussion of the LCA report, which proposes a comprehensive set of recommendations for
providing artwork and art programs for the Community Center opening and beyond. We realized that
this is outside the scope of this working group. Pat will put the LCA in touch with Linda Vine.
Next meeting:
November 21, 2014, time and location TBD. Pat, Mark, and Laurie will work with SBA interior
designers and come up with furniture and colors to bring before the committee.
Meeting adjourned at 3:06 PM.
