DEP# 201-934, BL 894
Applicant: Stephen Schrodel
Install a post-and-rail fence and alpaca shelter within an existing lawn and
meadow area within the 100-foot Buffer Zone to Bordering Vegetated Wetland
Present for the Applicant: Rich Kirby, LEC Environmental Consultants, Inc. and
Steve Schrodel, Applicant/Homeowner
Mr. Kirby submitted a revised plan for an alpaca shelter and fence at 40 Fern
Street. The fence is proposed to be located outside the 25-foot buffer zone and
the alpaca shelter outside the 50-foot buffer zone. Mr. Kirby explained that the
homeowners have been removing invasive species and maintaining an open
meadow type habitat.
Comments from the Commission as follows:
Mr. Langseth asked what kind of damage the alpacas would do to the turf and if
they were a noisy animal. Mr. Schrodel replied that alpacas are smaller than
llamas and they have a soft padded foot with a quiet humming sound. Ms.
Schrodel commented that alpacas graze and only nibble the surface of the grass,
which does not pull the roots up. Mr. Bitsko asked if any trees would be
impacted. Mr. Kirby replied that a few Spruce trees may be affected. Mr. Bitsko
and Mr. Langseth discussed mowing versus letting the area go fallow and
planting native species. Mr. Bitsko suggested a buffer for protection of the
resource area and a native seed mix.
The homeowners of 43 Fern Street are in support of this project.
Jim Wilson of 36 Fern Street stated that the alpaca shelter would add character to
the neighborhood and is in support of it.
Motion made and seconded to close the hearing, 6-0 in favor.
7:41 pm Motion made and seconded to adjourn the meeting, 6-0 in favor.
Respectfully submitted,
Michelle Tassi
