HomeMy WebLinkAbout2014-11-13-TREE-min Town of Lexington Lexington Tree Committee Minutes November 13, 2014 A meeting of the Lexington Tree Committee was held on November 13, 2014, 7:30-9:30 a.m. at the Samuel Hadley Public Services Building, Room 125. A quorum of five was present. Members Present: Chris Filadoro, (Public Grounds Superintendent, Tree Warden), John Frey (chair), Karen Longeteig, Jewel Kuljian, Gerry Paul, Anne Senning, Jim Wood Members Absent: Selectman Liaison Guests: Ginna Johnson, Planning Board Liaison The meeting acted on the following items: 1. Anne Senning was appointed asscribe, and the minutes of the meeting of October 9, 2014, were approved. 2. Tree Warden items: Bylaw tree removal applications and activity: Chris Filadoro provided a preliminary report which included a breakdown by site of trees removed, inches removed and trees to be planted. He promised a ‘to date’ report of total bylaw visits, inches removed and trees planted. Tree Committee discussed the fact that many trees are cut in new construction projects and renovations that are outside the area covered by the tree bylaw. These trees are not reflected in the monthly statistics. 3.Emerald ash borer activity Joel Custance, Forestry Crew Chief reported that the Emerald ash borer activity has spread to the White Fringetree. 4. Plan for finishing the Town Tree Inventory: Chris Filadoro reported all the leads that he had followed. The current plan is for Chris to re contact Dave Lefcourt, City Arborist, City of Cambridge to consult with him about additional ideas. 5. Mapping for Spring Planting Anne Senning described the mapping program made available to tree committee members by Judy Baldasaro, GIS Database Administrator, which uses a program she developed which works with Google Earth. 6. Nell Walker’s Commemorative Striped Maple Grove, Signage in Lincoln Park,Planting Date November 10, Celebration Date December 12: Planting: Matt Foti Landscape and Tree Service planted five Striped maples 11/10/14. Nell Walker observed the installation with one of her sons. Chris Filadoro stated that he thought the striped maples should have been planted further apart for long-term growth and ease of maintenance. This engendered a general discussion of how far apart various species of trees need to be planted in different settings. Sign: The wording of the sign was completed in conjunction with the Lincoln Park Committee. The sign will be installed near the Striped Maple Grove in Lincoln Park in spring 2015. Celebration: Site; DPW cafeteria, Program; 12/12/14 2-4 p.m., digital photos of Nell’s contributions to town, designated speakers, open mike, Lincoln Park maps, Food; Staff; Tree Committee members as available, Publicity; Invitations, Lexington Minuteman, Colonial Times. 7. Bare root trees for Fall 2014: Chris Filadoro made maps of tree locations for Fall 2014 while stakes were being set for Dig Safe. This will facilitate locating trees in the town database. Forty (40) trees were ordered. Twenty-eight (28) arrived. Five (5) Kentucky coffeetrees were not plantable. Chris is working to correct the errors. 8. Location of White spruces: Chris Filadoro provided a 2014 digital tree planting map showing the location of the 3 remaining white spruce behind the center pool complex. 9. Buckman Tavern Beech Renovation Work Group: John Frey, Karen Longeteig, and Jim Wood will meet at the site 11/20/14 10 a.m. to begin the evaluation of the tree in question. 10.Town decision on the sale of tax-title land (lot 107) to owner of 26 Laconia Street: Chris Filadoro stated that this is not on the Selectmen’s agenda yet. 11. New Tree Committee Member: Jewel Kuljian reported that Jane Beswick declined, due to many prior commitments. Karen Longeteig suggested Nancy Sofen, a woman she knows through working with the High School landscaping project. Karen will follow up a contact in January 2015. There was no remote participation.
