Minutes of September 11, 2004 Meeting
Attendees: John Frey(Chairman), Jewel Kuljian, Anne Senning, Jim Wood, Ginna
Johnson(Liaison to the Tree Committee from the Planning Board). Absent: Karen
Longeteig, Gerry Paul and Chris Filadoro(attending a meeting of the Center
Committee). Jewel Kuljian appointed as scribe.
Note: Chris checked in before his meeting and inquired about a Commemorative Tree,
one of two Pear trees planted at the entrance of the football field at the high school.
This tree is to be in memory of Gary Ganley, a DPW worker recently deceased. The
Tree Committee prefers the traditional Commemorative tree tag for this memorial. Jane
Beswick will contact Chris and John.
1. Minutes of the August 14th meeting were reviewed and approved as amended.
2. By-law Tree removal applications and activity: Chris will email this to Tree
Committee members.
3. Progress on hiring Contractor to complete tree inventory - Chris will report status at
the next Tree Committee meeting.
4. Four remaining Tulip Trees. Chris will notify Tree Committee members of the
planting locations. One is reported to be at Hastings Park and one at Rindge Park.
5. Fall 2014 Tree Ordering for bare root trees. The discussion about planting Oaks in
the fall as well as documentation about the research of same will defer the planting of
Swamp White Oaks and Red Oaks until spring. A discussion ensued about being
mindful of attempting to plant native species. A motion to have Jim purchase from
Schichtels Nursery ten of the following 1 1/2 bare root trees: Tilia Americana
Legend/American Linden Legend, Gymnocladus DioicusEspresso/Kentucky Coffee
treeEspresso, and Syringa reticulataIvory Silk/Tree Lilac Ivory Silk with an
amendment to plant the Tree Lilacs in public areas if possible as an ornamental tree.
Vote 3 to 1 passed. Jim will also request the spring 2015 list for bare root species from
Schichtels and Baileys Nurseries.
6. The seven white spruce to be planted near the rear of 46 Brandon St. behind the
Toyota Dealership are due in to the vendor (Shemin) on September 17th. DPW will do
the planting.
7. Matt Foti recommends planting Nell Walkers Commemorative Striped Maple grove
at Lincoln Park site after one or two hard frosts in late October/early November. The
date for the dedication as well as the invitation list, i.e. Lincoln Park Committee, Tree
Committee, Friends of Lincoln Park and others is to be determined. David Williams will
be contacted to obtain a list of invitees.John and Anne will coordinate this process.
8. According to Matt Foti, the large Beech tree at the Visitors Center with two large
dead limbs has soil compacted from years of foot traffic and reduced conduction from
the fibrous roots. He does not feel the tree should be saved. He can offer a Beech tree
replacement of 3 up to 7 caliper. Tree Committee advises the tree to be removed, no
vote taken. An American Sycamore is under consideration. To avoid compaction in the
future mulch, ground cover, and lawn were all discussed.
9. Grading around Hancock Street Beech Tree. Chris will report on progress.
10. Matt Foti reported that the trees at Lexington Toyota are being treated for mites
with a follow-up fertilization this fall to supplement nutrients lost by the insect damage.
George Grey has been receptive to the needs of the trees.
11. Maple Tree Hearing at #1 Carley Road Thursday September 18, 2014 at 8am
12. 26 Laconia Street- John and Jim will visit this property where the owner wants to
purchase the sale of tax-title land adjacent to his property. They will mark trees to be
saved, and will draft a letter for the Selectmen regarding a formal restriction to preserve
several Hickory trees on this property and certain Oak trees.
13. The Tree Committee recommends that Chris Filadoro follow Matt Fotis advice
about watering the Lindens in Lexington Center that are drought stressed until the
ground freezes as well into the following summer. The Tree Committee will review
more information from Matt regarding the situation of the borer affecting the Ash Trees.
14. Tree Committee report for the 2014 Town Annual Report: The number of trees
planted is now to be for fiscal year (July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2014). vs. calendar year.
15. Items to add to the agenda of the next meeting: 1) Center revampment/tree planting,
2) watering trees/process, 3) documenting fall tree planting.
