Members Present: Wendy Rudner, Lisah Rhodes, Rick DeAngelis Staff Present: Karen Simmons, Director of Recreation, Chris Filadoro, Superintendent of Public Grounds, and Sheila Butts, Assistant Director of Recreation Others Present: John Allen, Pine Meadows Golf Club Superintendent, and Thomas Romano, Recreation Summer Intern. The Recreation Committee meeting began at 5:35 p.m. The meeting acted on the following items: 2. Liaison Reports — Wendy Rudner told the members of the Recreation Committee that there had been no official Lincoln Park Subcommittee Meeting to date this summer. 3. Lincoln Park Field 1 Update — Karen Simmons, Director of Recreation reported that there is continued discussion between the Town's attorney, Northeast Turf and their attorney. A meeting is scheduled on Friday, July 18 with an independent synthetic turf expert to discuss the situation. 4. Golf Course Report and Tour ® John Allen, Pine Meadows Golf Club Superintendent, reported to the Recreation Committee on the conditions at Pine Meadows, which are excellent. • Mr. Allen informed the Committee of work to refurbish the 6th 9th and 4th tees that had winter damage. • League play remains steady. • Mr. Allen noted that the money patrons pay to play golf at Pine Meadows goes back into the maintaining and improving the course, which is greatly appreciated by the golfers and New England Golf Corporation. • Members of the Recreation Committee briefly discussed the status of the course, its playability, course improvements, and the plans for future projects at the course. In response to a question from Mr. DeAngelis, Mr. Allen told the Recreation Committee that the biggest challenge the staff continues to face this season is "getting the greens back up and open ". While proceeding with work on the greens, the Pine Meadows staff always tries to communicate effectively with 1625 MASSACHUSETTS AVENUE ® LEXINGTON, MASSACHUSETTS 02420 the players, Ms. Rudner asked if it was possible to check the green covers throughout the winter months. Mr. Allen explained the two different types of covers used, including an impermeable cover, which does not allow moisture to seep onto the greens, but also does not insulate them from some freezing. He noted that the USGA reported that greens damage were a problem from Maine to New Jersey this past year. Pine Meadows fortunately was effected less than many other courses. Karen Simmons, Director of Recreation, and Mr. Allen told the Committee that New England Golf Corporation and the Recreation Department continue to follow the USGA recommendations, a copy of which was provided to Committee members at an earlier meeting and is attached. These recommendations include updating and refurbishing sand traps, dredging work on the ponds to keep them free of silt, and pump repairs and replacement. Due to the weather, no tour of the golf course took place. The next meeting of the Recreation Committee will take place on Wednesday, September 3 in the Parker Room in the Town Office Building at 7:00 p.m. The July 16, 2014 meeting of the Recreation Committee adjourned at 6:20 p.m. The following documents /exhibits distributed at the meeting are attached: Respectfidly Submitted, Sheila Butts Assistant recreation Director 2
