HomeMy WebLinkAbout2014-02-07-LHRC-min Lexington Human Rights Committee Meeting Minutes February 7, 2014 Present: Linda Vine, Bonnie Brodner, Aidan Evelyn, Fuang-Ying Huang, and Sean Osborne Meeting at Parker Room – Town Hall, was called to order at 8:10AM Welcome new committee member, Sean Osborne. The group reviewed an application from another interested resident, who will be invited to the March meeting. Police report: LPD had a successful forum with Indian Americans in Lexington in response to the break-ins in last November. Three Indian American families were broken in and jewelries were stolen from them. Detective Evelyn indicated that the families were not targeted because of their ethnicity, but their cultural custom of keeping jewelry at home particularly during certain Indian holidays. There were 24 break-ins in Lexington since last November, which was down from prior years. There is a self-defense class for women by Lexington Recreation Department. Other violence prevention programs include Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP), where men and women work together in preventing men’s violence against women; Men Can Stop Rape mobilizes youth male to prevent men’s violence toward women; and Male Athletes Against Violence by University of Maine. Linda will invite Lexington Economic Development Director, Melisa Tintocalis to the next meeting with the HRC meeting in March. Melissa Buttaro was very interested in getting started with developing a program for local business to understand and better serve the increasingly diversified town residents. The next committee meetings time and location are to be determined. The meeting adjourned at approximately 9:00 am.
