Lexington Tree Committee Minutes
June 12, 2014
A meeting of the Lexington Tree Committee was held on June 12, 2014, 7:30-9:30 a.m. at the
Samuel Hadley Public Services Building, Room 125. A quorum of six was present.
Members Present: Chris Filadoro, (Public Grounds Superintendent, Tree Warden), John Frey
(chair), Karen Longeteig, Gerry Paul, Anne Senning, Nell Walker, Jim Wood
Members Absent: Jewel Kuljian, Deborah Mauger (Selectman Liaison),
The meeting acted on the following items:
1.
Anne Senning was appointed asscribe, and the minutes of the meeting of May 8, 2014, were
approved.
2. Tree Warden items: Bylaw tree removal applications and activity:
Chris Filadoro
provided a report (2/14/14 – 6/1/14) which included a breakdown by site of trees removed,
inches removed and trees to be planted. He also provided a ‘to date’ report of total bylaw visits,
inches removed and trees planted.
3. Plan for finishing the Town Tree Inventory:
Chris Filadoro reported that he will hire a
contractor to finish the tree inventory using contacts made either through himself, Joel Custance,
Crew Chief or Karen Longeteig.
4a. Spring 2014 Planting: Review of Current Status, Changes for Fall 2014
Shemin
delivered the 10 special order (replacements for dead trees, additional redbuds) trees today.
Changes for fall planting 2014: No additional trees will be ordered once the original order runs
out. John and Anne’s team will place the white Dig Safe stake rather than the short yellow or
orange stake. Chris will no longer be copied on routine planting emails. Jim will check the
required height of a Dig Safe stake.
4b. The issue of planting trees in condominium developments

5. Katahdin Woods tree removal for solar panel installation:
John Frey reported on a ZBA
hearing where the issue is the removal of 10 mature Pin oaks for the installation of new solar
panels. After discussion the committee voted to keep the 10 Pin oaks. John Frey and Jim Wood
will meet with the lawyer from Katahdin Woods to discuss facilitation and mediation.
6. Trees requested by Garett Burke 46 Brandon St to screen Toyota lights from bikeway:
Tree committee will assist DPW in landscaping design of Minuteman Bikeway (MBTA land)
behind Toyota to screen Toyota lighting from Brandon St. area.
7. Tree Data:
Chris Filadoro provided 2013 tree planting maps and lists to Karen Longeteig.
She will transcribe lists to digital form and will use data to locate 300 Anniversary tags. Karen
will provide Jewel Kuljian and Anne Senning with digital locations of the trees. Anne will
transcribe the tree data into the town database.
8. Nursery Renovation Plan:
Discussion postponed.
9.Early ordering of Fall 2014 Bareroot Trees:
Jim Wood stated that time dictates the choice
of tree species and ordering begin before the next committee meeting. Anne Senning agreed to
send him a list of trees that can be planted and trees that are fall planting hazards. Chris Filadoro
stated that he would like to have 50 trees planted in the fall 2014, 10 each of 5 species.
10. Concord Ave. assessment by Arborist of trees? Also Robinson Rd.
Discussion postponed.
11. 6” mulch buffer around trees in asphalt.
After discussion Chris Filadoro stated that he
works together with John Livsey P.E., Town Engineer and Mark Valenti, Highway
Superintendent and to create bumpers around trees when sidewalks are created or renovated.
12. Commemorative Trees:
a. Nickles family planted on Cary Memorial Halllawn
; inscription, “Greenspire Linden
Tilia cordata “Greenspire” 2014 This tree is give with great gratitude to Lexington for being our
wonderful hometown for 55 years John and Marjorie Nickles”
b. Proposed Nell Walker Commemorative Striped Maple grove in Lincoln Park
Two
potential sites have been chosen: the first by Nell Walker with John Frey and Anne Senning, the
second by Wes Wirth, Landscape Architect for a section of Lincoln Park. These sites will be
reviewed. Matthew R. Foti can supply the striped maples in fall 2014 to match those that are
already planted in a nearby section of the park. Chris Filadoro has approved the purchase. Jim
Wood has secured Lincoln Park committee permission.
13.DAR Arbor Day offer
. John Frey stated that Cindy Woolworth of the Lexington Chapter of
the DAR has offered trees for Arbor Day 2015. Further discussion postponed.
There was no remote participation. The meeting was not recorded.
