Member Concerns
Laura had some thoughts after meeting with Nancy Adler. We will continue to discover what types
of shops other centers run. Jon suggested visiting other sites, perhaps with interested seniors, and
taking a phone video as a better representation than still photos. We will pursue this. We also need
to clarify what will and will not be permitted in the kitchen.
Discussion of Community Programming
Florence describes what she thinks of as the distinguishing characteristics of the Community Center:
Like "family room of Harwich", we need a statement of the LCC's niche
We are only limited by our imaginations
intergenerational
open to families
drop-in 'place to go'
an open-ended place where any idea is possible
Leslie Zales forwarded us an email from the programs working group of the Youth Services Council,
which met with students on May 7 to get their thoughts on programs and space usage. Jon will treat
their list of activities as an input to the matrix.
When the LCC is in operation, it is expected that there will be an on line LCC schedule of events.
Jon was wonderingif Harry F. might know of a way to categorize programs and say 'if you like this,
you might also like...' as a way to figure out how to keep oneself busy.
Master Matrix - Process
We examined the "music/theater" section of the complete program matrix. The remaining categories
are: services, socialization, and specialized.
Each entry was marked as one or more of:
D duplicate of item already on the list
K keep (things being done now and in budget)
N new (planned but not yet budgeted)
F future (something we hope to do at some point)
C something that will be 'citizen-run' (therefore not in budget of Rec or Hsvcs)
E expansion of a current offering (keyed as KE keep and expand)
S someplace else (will be offered at a non-community center location)
G general type activity\[these items will be ignored in the final offerings\]
Issues brought up during the meeting:
What are 'citizen-run' activities? How will they be managed? Who helps out with problems
and issues? Staff? Which?
Do we need to have conversations with additional groups now?
Why don't we have special categories of programs, such as "senior" or "special needs" ?
Karen says her model is inclusive, that there could be special programs run for very particular
groups, but that the basic offerings are open to anyone with that interest.
Karen and Charlotte met at 22 Muzzey St. on April 29 with managers from TILL (Toward
Independent Living and Learning) to find out what they would like to see at the LCC.
Charlotte will forward that information to Jon so he can enter it into the matrix. Charlotte
feels these are captured in the matrix already.
Significant Considerations:
We discussed having someone manage the utilization of the building and its equipment. They
will coordinate staff-run programs, community-run programs, and drop-ins in accordance
with policies and procedures
Karen and Charlotte indicated that programs offered at the LCC should not be clinical in
nature.
