Announcements from Council members 6:20 METCO scholarship fund has received a matching donation of $5,000; contributions are on-going, please email Jill Smilow with questions Seniors have five days of classes left; atmosphere is good The Junior Prom was a successful event Currently, there is no student running (in the school elections) for the open student slot on the council III. Old Business6:30 A.Final recommendation on possibility of limiting the number of AP courses a student can take at LHS. The consensus of the council, at this time, is to not limit the number of AP courses a student can take in four years We will monitor the data for sophomore year AP courses; counselors have expressed an observation that more students are opting for 1 AP course in grade 10 (this is reflected in this yearÈs data); the course recommendations discussions the grade 9 teachers are having with students has also influenced decisions to address stress There were approximately 800 students who took AP exams this year IV. New Business 6:45 A. Review draft School Improvement Plan 2014-2015 The council members broke into small group discussions to review the plan. Liked the simplicity of the plan; previous plans contained too much Liked the new format Supported the goals and implementation steps; glad to see an evaluation of homework as an instructional strategy Noted that the school must be sure to address equity issues when it comes to technology use in the classroom Clarified the Chapter 222 (mgl 37H ) law that addresses procedures for notifying parents about specific attendance patterns and/or suspensions (begins July 1) Provided feedback on word changes and clarity for the school culture goal; the suggestions were included in the final draft B. Review the district Mission, Vision, and Belief draft Does the draft mission statement address life after high school? Some council members did not agree with the term Çworld class educationÈ Could the mission statement include the term Çlife-long learningÈ? Does the mission statement address/reflect citizenship? One council member preferred to use students, rather than children (in the statements) Belief #2: Not in total agreement about this belief à does honoring diversity achieve equity and excellence? Success instead of excellence? Belief #4: Seems to be phrased in the negative (not fixed, rather than ÅIntelligence can be continuously developed.Æ) Question: Who is the audience? Supporting Statement: Explanations to the public will provide context for the statements. V. Adjournment 7:45
