Karen Gaughan (committee membership application is awaiting approval) Business • Suzie Barry convened the meeting at 7 pm. • November 20, 2013 and January 8, 2014 minutes were approved with amendments. • Committee's next meeting is Wednesday, February 12, 2014. • Budget update. The $5,000 additional funding request for Dance Around the World is included in the town manger's recommended budget that will be submitted to town meeting for consideration in March. • Committee liaison assignments were reviewed and amended. • Veterans' photos taken at the breakfast have been printed; the accompanying letter is ready for Suzie's signature. Patriots' Day 2014 Security concerns. Charlie Price asked about security for the day. Suzie reported that she has been in meetings for months with many of the town departments about security concerns. At this time, she is not able to share any information with the committee. Calendar review. As of this meeting, we are 89 days away from parade day. Deadline for submission of material for inclusion in the events' brochure was January 15th; Suzie is waiting for two outstanding replies. There are no major changes in this year's schedule of events. Afternoon parade. • Application deadline for marching units is February 15th. A third to a half of applications has been received. Committee can begin to vote acceptance of the applications at the February 12th meeting. Vehicle and float applications deadline is March 1St • Expect a police presence at the parade line up in east Lexington. With changes in vehicle guidelines, all vehicles will be inspected for proper insurance and operator(s) must have the appropriate license to operate them. Each group entering vehicles must submit an itemized list of participating vehicles. • Under no circumstances will firing of any kind of weapon be tolerated. • Few marching bands are signed up to march this year. There are no active duty military bands yet, and Immaculate Heart of Mary cannot participate. Committee discussed the need to recruit replacements. • The sponsorship letter has been approved by the selectmen. The solicitation list needs to be approved. • Kim Coburn reported that the LHS fine arts director is interested in having a student competition for a parade ambassadors' tee shirt design. Members talked about whether there should be parameters set regarding design or let the students create on their own. March 1st was set for the design deadline. • Sandy Podgorski will check into identifying clothing for committee members. • How we might recognize last year's Boston Marathon bombing this year will be discussed again at the February 12th meeting. Memorial Day 2014 Committee will discuss speaker and chief marshal recruitment at the next meeting. Other Business • Heritage of America Band. Admission to the Friday, April 25th concert, 7:30 pm at Cary Hall will require tickets. Tickets are free and will be made available through the band's website. Accessing details to follow soon. • Military monuments in Lexington. Formation of a new committee is being considered by the Board of Selectmen to assume responsibility for the town's military monuments. Town Celebrations Committee members discussed interest in having a TCC liaison /representative to the proposed seven - member monuments committee. Lexington had one casualty of the Vietnam war, and it was suggested that if everything is in place with the new committee by Memorial Day, we could recognize this soldier at the ceremony; if not, then possibly on Veterans' Day.
