HomeMy WebLinkAbout2013-03-26-SLC-min Town of Lexington Sustainable Lexington Committee Minutes of Meeting of March 26, 2013 A meeting of the Sustainable Lexington Committee (SLC) was held on March 26, 2013 at the Town Hall. A quorum of five was present. Members Present: Mark Sandeen, Chair Rick Abrams, Rick Reibstein, Todd Rhodes, Dan Voss Members Absent: None Other Attendees: Joe Pato, Sarah Wilson The meeting was called to order at 7:00 pm. The committee discussed tasks for a potential intern, including: Next Step Living (NSL) outreach planning calenda Webpage Analysis of assessorÈs data Commercial business Better Buildings Climate Action Plan Analyze NSL databases Mr. Abrams provided an update on NSL activities: Mr. Abrams will get the list of TCC contacts from NSL and prepare a survey. Then weÈll send a generic email to the TCC contacts to let them know that someone from the committee will be following up with them by phone. th Mr. Sandeen reported on the NSL table that was set up at the 300 celebration weekend. Of three contacts at the table that had a TCC evaluation, one was positive, signed up for the system but then backed out, and the third wanted more information on cost. Mr. Sandeen reported on his meeting with the League of Women Voters (LWV). No one at the meeting was aware of the Better Buildings program. We need to improve our website (compare to Natick, Belmont, others) Page 1 of 2 Some towns have a town email list, but Lexington does not. School PTOs might be able to provide their email lists. On May 3, the LWV First Friday will focus on Next Steps for Climate Action The meeting will focus on past successes. They will involve DPW staff involved in projects presented by Candy at the last meeting, and Mr. Sandeen will talk about the solar activities to show what has been done so far. He will also discuss NSL successes (438 home energy assessments). The meeting will also discuss Community Emergency Resource Teams (CERTS) where neighborhood groups get involved in emergency response and looking out for neighbors. Examples of technology-enabled approaches are the NSTAR/National Grid apps that residents can use to identify downed lines. Mr. Pato recommended checking with the Fire and Police à they may already have a similar program. Success stories could include: Buildings efficiency Energy (solar, renewables) Transportation Land-use pesticides Waste, food waste, composting Outreach to schools (elementry, middle, high schools) Reach out to both PTOs and teachers Bring in college students to talk to kids (Colleges have Åeco-repsÆ) Solar Task Force Mr. Voss reported that he met with Cadmus à they will draft an RFP. He will then sit down with Erin. It takes 12 weeks to get through the RFP process. Climate Action Plan Need to consider: Stakeholders Vulnerabilities Sectors (should economic development be included?)
