HomeMy WebLinkAbout2013-05-28-SLC-min Town of Lexington Sustainable Lexington Committee Minutes of Meeting of May 28, 2013 A meeting of the Sustainable Lexington Committee (SLC) was held on March 26, 2013 at the Town Hall. A quorum of five was present. Members Present: Mark Sandeen, Chair Rick Abrams, Todd Rhodes, Dan Voss, Sarah Wilson Members Absent: Rick Reibstein Other Attendees: Joe Pato The meeting was called to order at 7:10 pm. Minutes from the March 26, 2013 meeting were approved by the committee Mr. Abrams provided an update on the Better Buildings program: Next Step Living (NSL) has restarted the Total Climate Control (TCC) program in Lexington. As an inducement to residents, NSL is offering free weatherization and a Sienna Farms Community Sustained Agriculture (CSA) share. The committee discussed potential drop off sites for the CSA shares. Options included Ride Studio, Panera, Nourish, and Busa Farm. NSL collected 12 sign-ups for home energy assessments (HEAs) at a recent FarmerÈs Market and 20 sign-ups at Stop and Shop. Statistics for the number HEAs in Lexington are now up on the SLC website. We are planning to have a table at Discovery Day à shared with NSL. Materials needed for the table include posters to describe: Solar Task Force plans à Mr. Voss Better Buildings program à Mr. Abrams Climate Action Plan à Mr. Sandeen Solar Task Force Mr. Voss reported that the RFP is in process with Town management and it is expected to be released at the end of June. The bid evaluation process is being established. The RFP includes schools, DPW, and Hartwell. The expectation is that it will take 8 to 10 weeks to receive the bids, so they are expected in August. Page 1 of 2 Solarize Massachusetts Fran Ludwig has offered to lead the effort for the upcoming Solarize Massachusetts proposal and has requested formal endorsement from the Sustainable Lexington Committee. The committee voted to support the process with four in favor. Mr. Sandeen abstained. Commercial Buildings Program The committee discussed contacting the Lexington Retailers Association, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Rotary Club to develop support for working with NSTAR to conduct energy assessments for Lexington businesses. Mr. Rhodes and Ms. Wilson will contact the organizations. Also, the White HouseÈs website has information on ÅBetter BuildingsÆ for commercial buildings. Summer Interns Two interns will be working with the committee this summer on projects including work on the website and planning community engagement for the Climate Action Plan. Other topics: Potential topics for the ÅAll Things SustainableÆ column include: 400ppm, Green cars, lawn mowers, air source heat pumps. The committee discussed opportunities for a bike sharing program and discussed potential sites where there would be sufficient volume to support the program (e.g., from the Center to Hartwell for bus commuters).
