VOTE: 6-0
2.Correspondence:
Ms. Rodgers reported that outreach at the Senior Center not only includes a suggestion
box, as requested by a resident, but also a rolling bulletin board where comments can be posted. Ms. Hussong
volunteered to send a photo of a suggestion box with a short write-up to the newspapers. Ms. Zales reported
th
that she will be making a presentation about the new Community Center at the Lions Club on March 11.
Ms. Ciccolo reported that members of the Carter family, which lived in the mansion at 39 Marrett Road, have
contacted the Town about visiting the building before it is renovated. It is hoped that they can provide some
historical documentation about the house. She also reported that the original tea set used in the mansion is
going to be donated to the Town.
The recently updated Work Plan was discussed. There wasn’t consensus on dates for some meetings.
ACTION ITEMS: Ms. Ciccolo will conduct a Doodle poll to find a date for meeting with the COA Board.
This was originally scheduled for March 5, but that day is needed for a meeting to finalize a March 12
presentation to the BoS. Ms. Ciccolo will conduct a second Doodle poll to find a date when this Committee
can walk through the new Community Center while thinking about specific programs. The walk-through will
th
be after February 28 when this Committee will meet to review a program matrix and operating assumptions.
3.SBA February 12, 2014 PowerPoint Presentation:
Ms. Wilson reviewed the most current Community
th
Center floor plans, which incorporated suggestions made during the February 4 meeting. She also
summarized the plans for flooring materials to be used.
Ms. Wilson provided some historical maps to illustrate when and where houses had existed prior to 1905,
when the mansion was built. The building was designed as a colonial revival and incorporates traditional
elements or that style.
4.Staff and Liaison Reports:
Mr. Goddard reported that he and the SBA consultants are meeting in the
evening with the Energy Committee regarding the heating, ventilating, and air conditioning system in the
Community Center.
Ms. Rodgers reviewed a handout that demonstrates the demand for fitness and meal programs at the Senior
Center. She noted that participation in the fitness programs has increased considerably. There has been a
decrease in those who come to the center for “congregate” meals, excluding special lunches, lunches with
lectures, and meals on wheels. The number of seniors in the Town continues to increase.
Ms. Rodgers and Ms. Butts discussed the costs involved in bulk mailings. The Senior Center mails out its
newsletter to every senior who is 65 years or more; this costs approximately $12,000 per year. In Fiscal Year
2013, the Recreation Department mailed its program brochure to Lexington’s approximately 12,000
households, which cost over $17,000. Methods to reduce these costs, including electronic mailings, are being
explored.
5.Adjourn:
Ms. Rodgers offered to give a tour of the Senior Center. A motion was made and seconded to
adjourn the meeting at 9:15 .. to allow time to tour the facility. The motion passed. VOTE: 8-0
