HomeMy WebLinkAbout2013-12-02-Hastings-min Minutes Site Council – Maria Hastings Elementary Members Present: Dan Strollo, Miranda Clarke, Kris Meeting Spriano, Bettina McGinsey, Sheila Kaspik, Debbie Krasnow, Patty McLaughlin, Jane Kalinski, Louise Lipsitz, and Anne Knight Date Monday, December 2, 2013 Time 7:45 am – 8:30 am Library, Maria Hastings Elementary, 7 Crosby Road, Location Lexington, MA 1. Welcome and introductions 2. Minutes from 10/28/13 approved 3. First Class site/conference has been set for the Hastings Site Council (hastingssitecouncil@sch.ci.lexington.ma.us) ; question is whether there can be an alert sent to Agenda members on council Louise will acknowledge response of email and provide information as to when will show up on agenda. 4. Enrollment discussed at School Committee meeting Tuesday November 19, 2013. Hastings is not included in any redistricting plan. Fiske was discussed due to increasing population. 3 new elementary classrooms across district 2014- 2015. Fiske and Bridge families spoke about concerns with movement out of their current schools; equity among the schools in terms of renovations was expressed. Dr. Ash welcomes expertise of community members with strong background in statistics; projections are based on census data. Statement of Interest will be submitted to state in January as soon as window opens on Hastings for a building to house 540 children (100 more than currently enrolled). Town has to vote that they will fund entire project before state will agree to fund any reimbursement. The %-age of reimbursement depends on need. Would like parental help with data collection regarding traffic flow (8:15-8:40 and 3:15 – at least two counters: Crosby Rd and the parking lot). Also need data on cars that park on Roosevelt or Wilson. Site council members will create a Sign Up Genius or other way to solicit support with a deadline of data collection by 12/12 Town wide facilities committee identified top needs as police, fire, and Hastings School. Town wide project will often join with a school project for an override. 4. Feedback on LEF School Community Grant application – large increase in funding. In past has been school based (books for classrooms, conference attendance for teachers) now expanding to social dynamics around adult interactions; hosting January 9 book group – Queen Bee Moms th and King Pin Dads End of Feb – community events Lisa Foo, local psychologist – long term goals for children and what are doing to help them get there and what’s working and what is not (pressure cooker lives) Event for children will be held simultaneously for mindfulness facilitated by Hastings parent Mary Ann Burnside (with high school students and perhaps teachers) The event will be 6:30-8:00, a Wednesday night and will include dinner. End of March – Sarah Ward Executive Function talk to parents – has worked with staff (Bridge and Hastings) Rosalind Wiseman – Teachers in afternoon and parents in evening Miranda has looked into opportunities around teasing and bullying – to be effective must be more than a one-shot presentation. Rachel’s Challenge has been done at Diamond Middle School; another program was done at Clarke. Clarke was more successful due to follow-up, curricula, and layered PBIS Positive Behavioral Support Hastings Heroes Night – something to consider Health and Wellness night (Let’s Get Moving). Could be part of All School Meeting. Louise has met with Jen Wolfrom Health & Wellness and Val Viscosi Director of Guidance K-12 5. Member input 6. Adjournment
