Emily updated the committee on youth services activities on behalf of
Laurie who could not be present but submitted following information:
There is an increase in school referrals, school consultations, long
term therapy and requests for recreation scholarships. Short term
counseling is ongoing at Sr Ctr with students from the 2
middle schools and high school. Four community service students
were interviewed and set to volunteer in summer 2011. Youth Services
Council has appointed 2 new student reps. In partnership with Rec
Dept., 54 students from Clarke and Diamond enjoyed a field trip to
Kimball Farms in May. Together with the Health Dept, Youth
Services guided a student rep from the YSC in conducting 37 tobacco
compliance checks in Lexington, Winchester and Bedford. Five
vendors sold to students, two of those in Lexington. Laurie
participated in a review of the YRBS instrument adding relevant
questions in the area of youth sleeping habits.
Fuel Assistance:
This service ended for the season on Apria 30th. Applications for help
have doubled for Lexington residents, reflecting the national trend.
Youth gathering in the Center:
Lea reported an incident involving "rough housing" youths in the
center especially on Thursday afternoons. After some discussion it

was agreed that Lea would alert the police as to endangered seniors in th
location where young people gather. i
Transportation:
There is a new pilot project with LexPress with vans making the rounds to
senior housing and new people have appeared at the Sr Ctr. With the death
of Gail Wagner DPW personnel will carry on until a replacement of her
position is made.
Task force on Community Center:
The Selectmen have approved the appointment of a task force to look at the
feasibility of a Lexington community center. Representatives from various
agencies and age groups will be meeting in September to generate
information and report back to the selectmen at a later date. The two
representatives from the HSC will be Gail and Stephanie on this task force.
Discovery Day:
The HSD will have a table at Discovery Day with staff and volunteers and
materials to broadcast various services and programs.
Committee Membership:
We now have two vacancies and members are encouraged to recruit among
interested friends.
Lea, on behalf of the committee, expressed regrets at the departure of Herb
Wasserman who has been a faithful and productive member for many years
with a keen interest in human services.

Stephanie and Gail have volunteered to work on a brochure similar to one
available in Lincoln which will describe fuel assistance and other services
for distribution • the public.

Subject: Addenda to minutes 5/17/11
Race to Nowhere movie review:
Staff and committee members who attended the showing observed
that the audience was heavy on parents. There was discussion among
committee members who saw the film about the impact of education
and culture on family stress.
Volunteer Recognition:
Charlotte reported on the successful Volunteer luncheon at the Sr Ctr.
One hundred and twenty people attended and 80 volunteers were
recognized for their service.
Preretirement seminar:
Attendance was very high at a seminar aimed at younger seniors on
retirement planning; 33 were in that category including 8 town
employees.
