HomeMy WebLinkAbout2013-10-25-Bridge-minSITE COUNCIL 10/25/13 ATTENDANCE: Lynnette Allen, Nimisha Asthagiri, Russ Bosbach, Angela Chang, Meg Collela, Betsy Conway, Naomi Priver, Deb Sabin, Deidre Schadler, Debbi Side Guests: Lucia Gates, Susan Kingsbury 1.CYBER- LITERACY -- Lucia Gates and Lynnette Allen 1.COMMON SENSE MEDIA.ORG 2. last year did curriculum for 3 -5th grade 1.parents monitoring cell phone use, email but by and large children not using email 2.chat rooms attached to games is what is problem 1.kids don't know what it means, who may be on the chat room board 2.parents don't know about these, don't monitor, not paying attention to that 3.talk last year to school guidance counselors 1.says predators not most likely problem but peer bullying 2.if want a speaker may be able to get her to come 4. talk about log -in, what information to put in, what is private /public 5.1ast year was a pilot program at Bridge and Hastings, have to follow -up now and see what will implement 6.can parrot back about stranger danger, but unaware of peer troubles 1.a few years ago trouble with 5th grade chat room for homework evolves into who was cool enough to stay on 2.permanence of what is posted on Facebook, email 3.no true privacy (kids are innocent and are amazed about it) 3.may expand this year 1.Lynnette thinks is too young to introduce to K -2, but parents should be aware of and talk about at home 2. ?add social literacy to 2nd grade; already do in Open Circle 4.social behavior on line, need to apply what they have learned in Open Circle/ Responsive classroom 1.haven't sent home in a while material from Open Circle, may be good to send home and have parents 5.sent letter home to parents last year of 3 -5th graders 6.whole idea of instagram and pictures, what online profile people have, face recognition; colleges and prospective employers google and has impact on admission /hiring 2. PTA COFFEES (tend to have 3 -4 a year) 1.Nov 14th (Thurs) -- LITERACY Laura Broche and Jessica Cabriolet, just reading then in spring to do writing 2.will have emergency topic as indicated 3.can have social media literacy 4.ELL coffee for parents at Bridge 1.yesterday had all school meeting and invited parents, made connections 5.ideas of volunteer or enrollment, but is more thing people talk about and not much to 6.Math, different topics from last year; middle school not leveling but would be a middle school topic not in elementary 1.as a site council could talk to other site councils and see if enough chatter to address at larger level 2.in our school could talk about differentiation 7. report card, last year was test phase but nothing really changed 1.never had survey or official feedback (some parents contacted Carol Pilarski but no formal) 2. now end of January is 1 st report card (Jan 17th) 3.in Literacy Coffee could talk about what comes up on report card 4.year somewhat divided quarterly with conference, report card, conference, then end -of -of year report card 4 of elementary schools are piloting PARK but not Bridge, we are still doing MCAS committee formed to talk about foreign language (World Language Committee -- K -12 staff, parents, Central Office)
