-How best to use this time in SBC
-direction from Meg what teachers want
-review by dates what by law has to be done with School Improvement Plan
(SIP)
.we reviewed in the winter, look at it for feedback, then due in May
-lots of jargon in SIP, to have "cheat sheet" of what the abbreviations
mean; Nimisha had spoken with Dr Ash
•is a school -used document so those within school understand
-first 2 is
are the same across all schools
-also jargon in schools, Deb mentioned an article about "why I can't understand
my parent- teacher conference" so many assessments which aren't meaningful to
parents
.yesterday staff meeting Meg spoke with teachers to communicate the
ideas not necessarily the terminology
.?to have newsletter explaining the assessments, maybe when setting up
the conference sign -ups
-have a coffee, often not have large turnout but last year we proposed the
math coffee and it was well attended
-if target younger grades the parents will know as they progress through
the school
-also our population has changed and international families really do not
know what assessments are being done /what it means
-PTA breakfasts /coffees can join with SBC to have coffees to spread the words
-academic topics seem to have larger turn out
-change in standards aiming for the middle
-how does the school provide more for the children once they've met that
goal
-also with report card just to meet the standards, no A/B /C
-parents going beyond the school, ie for Math going outside to Joe Quigley
or Russian Math
-maybe coffee by Jean Kelly about how to extend in math
-standards are to be a progression, but this is not the way parents view
things
-length of meeting time, other schools 1 -1.5 hrs (HS is a unique identity)
-to be a facilitator instead of just understanding
-set agenda prior to meeting before the 48hr posting
-financial literacy, if Sean is here
-social media literacy
-are doing some things, to share with parents what are doing and to
support at home
-anti-bullying
-how as a community to deal with the social situations for parents to help
-communication
-also include in B2H, if have concerns to bring up to us, can give snapshot
of what we talked about and put it in
dates of upcoming meetings
