October 1, 2013 Board Members Present: Nancy Adler, Chair, Betty Borghesian, Marilyn Campbell, Camille Goodwin, Sophie Ho, Marion Kilson, Barbara Rediker, Julie Ann Shapiro Staff Present: Charlotte Rodgers, Director of Human Services, Barbara DeVeau, Senior Services Coordinator Selectman Liaison: Hank Manz Nancy Adler (NA) welcomed everyone and thanked Hank for providing microphones so we can all hear each other better. Public Comments: NA asked for public comment. No one requested time to speak. Review of October Minutes: Camille Goodwin (CG) moved to accept; Barbara Rediker (BR) seconded; all accepted. Human Service Staff Reports: Charlotte Rodgers (CR), Director of Human Services, requested that we vote on newsletter printer later in the meeting when she will describe the issues. CR spoke appreciatively about the support of the Friends of the Council on Aging (FCOA) for programs, special lunches and subsizing some trips, and for help in launching the LexConnect Taxi Program. The FCOA increased theih�MMMrship this year and we all thank them. The FCOA received funds from the Dana Fund to finance an adult learning program called Older Wiser Lifelong Learning, OWLL, sponsored by the FCOA. The Town of Lexington also made a contribution to this endeavor. The number of responses is very good, and the courses have started receiving very good reviews. CR drew our attention to the new community message board here in the main room of the Senior Center. Messages are already on it; many pertaining to planning for the new Community Center. Barbara Deveau, Senior Services Coordinator, reports that the new sign -up policy is working well. Lexington residents and one friend sign up in the first week of offering and seniors and friends from outside of Lexington can sign up after drat. Flu shots will take place this month. More health information will be asked of seniors who sign up to participate in exercise classes. Changing the Printer of the COA Newsletter: CR spoke about the differences between our current printer, "Liturgical Printers" and the possibility of using the Lexington schools printing service. Printing costs will increase but as seniors sign up for electfhic delivery, costs should decrease. The Board voted unanimously in favor of doing this. a Community Center Update by Betty Borghesani (BB) BB reported that the move -in will be in stages, interim and long- range. The necessary improvements, to the building like heating and ventilation, bathrooms, and lighting, will take priority. It is likely that the staff of the COA will move in May or June. The long -range plan will be figuring out space needs for seniors and teens and planning for a kitchen and gym. BB reported that the legal papers on the Mar7ett Road property will be passed on Nov.30, 2013. BB reminded everyone to come to the Town Meeting on the Community Center on Wed. Oct. 22, 2013 at 7:OOPM at Cary Hall. Status of Board Members terms by Marilyn Campbell (MC) MC reports that Gerry Howell who is spending more time at the Cape will not move up to Pres., but will stay on the Board until a replacement for him is found. NA will stay on as Pres. for another year. We need a vote. BR nominates NA, Sophie Ho (SH) seconds, and all unanimously agree. Committees and Liaisons Transportation — NA reports there will be a meeting on Wed, Oct 30, 2013 over the lunch hour with FISH, COA, and the Transportation Advisory Committee. Please call NA if you wish to attend. The Human Services Committee is sponsoring Oct 10, 2013 from 7:30 to 9:30 a forum on "Violence in the Media ". It will be replayed on Cable TV. Lexington Housing Authority — Camille Goodwin reports LHA did not meet over the summer. CG reports that the recreation programs provided by the COA have been well received.
