HomeMy WebLinkAbout2013-09-04-TCC-minMinutes Town Celebrations Committee September 4, 2013 Training Room 201 Bedford Street Members Present Suzie Barry, Dick Crogan, Linda Dixon, Paul Jenkins, Barbara Manfredi, Julie Miller, Wayne Miller, Bill Mix,Henry Murphy,Sandy Podgorskiand Bob Tracey Members Not Present Mary Gillespie, Sondra Lucente,Charlie Price and Dave Taylor Guest Selectman Hank Manz Business • Suzie Barry convened the meeting at 7:00 pm. • August 14, 2013 minutes were approved as corrected. • The fall meeting schedule has been set and all meetings will be held in the Training Room,201 Bedford Street. • Those members in the update cycle for ethics training will receive an e -mail from the Town Clerk's Office. Be sure to print two copies of the certificate when the training is complete — send one to Donna Hooper, Town Clerk, and retain one copy for your file. Elections Offices for 2013 — 2014: Suzie Barry was nominated for the office of Committee Chair; Bob Tracey and Dick Crogan were nominated as Co- Chairs; and, Linda Dixon and Sandy Podgorski were nominated to share the office of Secretary. A motion was made by Julie Miller to accept the nominations, which was accepted and approved. Veterans' Breakfast Update, Saturday, November 2, 2013 • Food.Suzie spoke with Neillio's and they are willing to prepare the same meal as last year for the same price. • Publicity. • Ryan Lennon is submitting breakfast details for the October edition of the senior center newsletter. Information will be sent to the Colonial Timesforthe September publication. • Save - the -date postcardswill be mailed soon and fliers will be available for posting. Deadline for ticket sales is set for Monday, October 28 • Speaker.Event speaker is as yet unnamed. Julie Miller will have information on the matter for the committee by this coming Friday. • Invitee. Jim Corcoran's(Hanscom PR office) retirement party will be held on Thursday, September 26 ". Members should tell Suzie if any are interested in attending. • Door Prizes. The committee has reviewed Dick Crogan and Sandy Podgorski's list of prospective solicitees. Dick presented his sample certificate of appreciation to be given to each of the donors. • Miscellaneous. The Lexington Minutemen will serve as honor guard. Veterans' Day Update, Monday, November 11, 2013 • Parade. The parade steps off at 10 am from the Hosmer House (site of the former school administration building); ceremony convenes at the new permanent location, Cary Hall, following the parade through town. Suzie reviewed the logistics of the parade. • Chief Marshal. Not finalized at this time. • Participating Groups. ■ Their information will be available this week. ■ William Diamond Fife & Drum will participate in both the parade and indoor ceremony. ■ The Master Singers have been invited to sing. We should know soon if they are available. • Wreaths. Bob Tracey will order the wreaths. • Maps /Duties. Both will be ready by next meeting. • Program. o Clergy. Linda Dixon asked the Interfaith Council to appointment someone. At the same time, she requested the council to consider our need for a clergy representative on Patriots' Day 2014. • Flags and Bunting. We have enough flags and bunting to decorate Cary Hall and Keilty Hall (for the breakfast). • Seat of Honor. A POW flag is needed for a chair. • Essay Contest. There is nothing new to report on the contest. Because of a change in school administrative staff and since the school curriculum is already set for the academic year, the committee discussed the difficulty and time constraint of trying to implement the contest this November. A motion was made to skip this year's contest andBarbara Manfredi will work to reestablish it for November 2014. The motion was accepted and approved. • Publicity. Articles to the press will include information regarding the parade and ceremony. o Approvals. Parade and ceremony approvals need to be submitted. Patriots' Day, April 21, 2014 • Reenactment. Changes necessitated by security concerns are being planned. • Parade. • Our hope is that the application will be available on line. • A request has been submitted for ten radios. • It is important that Paul Revere and John Dawes arrive in town on time. • Other. • Some sort of outerwear to identify committee memberswill be discussed. • Old Guard would like to be here for the event but funding is a factor. Other Business • Suzie and Linda shared their interest in making structural changes to the committee and taking it in a new direction. The idea is in the early planning phase but possibilities on how to restructure and recruit were discussed. A prospective new member open house in late October was suggested where interested folks would be invited for refreshments, or a buffet dinner, to hear members talk about their own experiences and reasons for participating. Members were asked to e-mail names of potentials to Suzie. • VSO Ryan Lennon received a grant and help from the Lexington Rotary Club to refurbish a memorial for a fallen member of the US Army Airbourne Division at the town pool flag pole. The serviceman was a Lexington resident who died in the 1980's. His parents still reside in town. Meeting adjourned at 8:15 pm Respectfully submitted by Sandy Podgorski
