A. Dance Procedures: Breathalyzer
• The high school is moving forward with the use of a breathalyzer at school
dances, beginning in the fall of 2013;
• Breathalyzer model is the same as the one used by Lexington Police;
administrators will receive training
• Breathalyzer will be used to screen a random proportion of students as they
enter a dance and/or when there is reasonable suspicion of a student being
under the influence;
• All procedures and language for the Student/Parent Handbook will be sent to
the district's legal counsel
B. Cell Phone Policy
• The process of review and finding a balance with the powerful resources of
cell-phone technology is difficult;
• The school is considering cell -phone use in identified locations on campus
and/or at teacher discretion;
• Laura asked the council members to share perceptions and thoughts regarding
potential changes in the current electronic device policy (under review):
1. Cell phones can be a valuable technology resource;
2. Concerns about equity if students in a class do not have a cell phone
and/or an equal level of access (to acquire information);
3. Concerns about distractions with frequent discretionary use by a teacher;
4. Concerns about cheating (students were less concerned);
5. Can we modify the way we deliver instruction /provide access to resources
and maintain a respect for individual classroom rules?
6. Evaluate the data from the iPad pilot surveys to better assess how teachers
and students feel about increased technology use in the classroom
