th
2020 Vision Committee
A meeting of the was held on Friday, March 15 at 7:45 a.m. in the Selectmen’s
Meeting Room in the Town Office Building at 1625 Massachusetts Avenue.
Members Present: Fernando Quezada, Jane Warren, Dan Krupka, Andrew Dixon, Bhumip Khasnabish,
Selectmen Liaison Joe Pato
Staff: Candy McLaughlin
Members Absent: Alan Wrigley, Peter Lee, Marian Cohen, Chuck Benson, Peter Enrich, Greg Zurlo
Margaret Coppe
Others present: Carroll Ann Bottino, George Burnell
Action Items:
Dan will check with Marian about finding an interesting bit of preliminary data to be included in
a quick thank-you from the Committee to the community for their positive response.
Approved the minutes from February 15, 2013.
The meeting acted on the following items:
Welcome to Joe Pato:
The committee congratulated Joe Pato on his recent election as Selectman and
welcomed him as the new liaison from the Board. Joe provided an overview of his background and
involvement in the Lexington community.
Discussed community survey:
Marian Cohen sent an email reporting that 1,163 responses were
submitted electronically and an additional 30 or so were returned in paper form. The extension until
March 6 enabled enough people to respond to make it a meaningful survey. The two Framingham State
students who entered the survey questions into Survey Monkey will also input the manual survey
responses and assist Marian in analyzing the results. The raw data will be available for the April
Committee meeting, but it will take a while to fully process the results. The Committee plans a report to
the three elected boards, particularly with regard to how the survey results compare to the original 2020
Vision goals.
Heard report on Winchester in Transition (WIT):
Margaret Heitz from the Demographic Change
nd
Subcommittee attended the 2 annual WIT Conference About Community, a half-day event about
diversity on March 2. She report to the Subcommittee that about 120 people attended the event and the
workshops were very interesting. Margaret provided contact information for the sponsoring organization,
Winchester Multicultural Network, which was founded in the early 90s. The Committee discussed the
possibility of Lexington planning a similar event; Dan said his subcommittee will include that in their
report, due in December.
Reviewed progress of subcommittee on demographic change:
Dan summarized the work of the
subcommittee as following up on the Demographic Change Task Force’s recommendations, in particular
trying to understand barriers to Asian participation in Town affairs. Their major current initiative is to
interview residents of Asian origin who have participated in community institutions – schools, LexFun,
LEF, boards & committees – to learn about their experiences. The SC has interviewed 13 people so far,
and plans 40-45 interviews in total. Preliminary results show that Asian participants in community affairs
st
are primarily Chinese, mostly 1 generation, and have experienced the following barriers: language &
culture, busy lives, and surprise that volunteers (rather than paid employees) do these things in the U.S.
Dan reported that Recreation Director Karen Simmons attended the last subcommittee meeting and had
some interesting ideas.
LWV Community Conversation on Climate Change:
Candy reported that this was an interesting and
successful event, and that the model developed by the League encouraged productive discussions.
Meeting Adjourned:
8:45 a.m.
Respectfully Submitted,
Candy McLaughlin, Scribe
