Suzie Barry convened the meeting at 7:05 pm.
Minutes. The September 19, 2012 minutes were approved with one change.
Election of Vice Chairman. Qualifications for the position were discussed. Suzie
expressed need for a candidate who is available and able to give considerable help to
the chairman with the possibility of stepping into the position at a later date. The
following motion is a result of that conversation --
The motion was made to accept Linda Dixon’s proposal to nominate Bob Tracey and
Dick Crogan as co-vice chairman, which was unanimously approved.
The need for new members was reiterated.
Calendar and member work assignments for upcoming events will be discussed at the
next meeting.
Veterans’ Breakfast 2012 Update
Thank you cards. Mary Gillespie asked for permission to invite veterans to accompany
her and Jane Huntley, head of the elementary social studies program, to elementary
classrooms to talk about veterans’ day and card preparation for distribution to the
veterans at the breakfast. Permission is required for the veterans to visit the
classrooms (as is the policy for all visitors) and every elementary school will be asked to
participate in the project.
Ryan Lennon made flyers for posting around town. Sandy Podgorski and Dick Crogan
will help with this.
There is still time to correct several errors about the breakfast that were printed in the
Colonial Times.
Lee Cummings will help us find a speaker for the morning.
Veterans’ Day 2012 Update
Approval. Selectmen approved the parade.
Essay contest. We have no entries to date. Contest announcement was not published
in the most recent edition of the Colonial Times. Ryan Lennon and Gresh Lattimore will
judge the essays. Barbara Manfredi was invited to be the third judge.
Chief Marshal. Aidan Evelyn accepted our invitation to be chief marshal.
Patriots’ Day 2013 Update
We have received five parade applications. Additional participants may include the
Philadelphia Mummers and Oscar Mayer wiener mobile.
A prominent out-of-state group has expressed interest in participating. A commitment
should be available by Thanksgiving.
Logistical concerns regarding transportation, parking, crowds, etc. for the day need to
be planned for early on. Suzie will begin to organize soon.
Sandy nominated all Tricon Hat recipients for chief marshal. Committee discussed
options for bringing the group down the avenue.
Members decided that it would be worthwhile for Lexington to repair and store here
the afternoon parade reviewing stands. Waltham’s Recreation Director, Sandy
Tomasello, will check with the proper channels to see if our proposal is acceptable.
Sam Williams, builder of the new podium, will donate his remaining funds toward the
purchase of five new service flags which will be kept in the Veterans’ Service Office.
Town Celebrations Committee will assume fund-raising responsibilities for the parade
from the Chamber of Commerce. There are solicitation guidelines that must be
followed. The money will be placed in the Selectmen’s gift account and used for the
parade, and any money currently available from past fund-raising efforts will be
transferred to this account. Recognition of contributors will be discussed.
Meeting adjourned at 8:25 pm
Respectfully submitted by Sandy Podgorski
