When Kerry Brandin and I appeared before the Commission last month, we sought approval for
banners and signs. The Commission approved the banners as presented but had requested that we
significantly reduce the size of the Liberty Ride Stop signs.
Subsequently, we have made every reasonable effort to comply with the request. Unfortunately,
the state and federal regulations continue to increase the size of signs. The standard no parking
signs, which are on many poles in the district, are in fact 12 x 18. That is the smallest sign
available. The sign makers tried to get old stock from various suppliers; however none was
available. We also attempted to have custom stock made but given the short time frame, there are
no options available.
Therefore, I would kindly request that for this pilot program the 12 x 18 size be approved. If we
are able to renew the program next year, we will continue to pursue options to obtain the smaller
size the Commission requested.
Thank you for your consideration of this request.
Ve,r truly yours,
Dawn E. McKenna

RE: Permission to Install Liberty Ride Stop Signs
DATE: June 1, 2003
This year the Liberty Ride will be operating from July 1 through October 13 (Columbus Day).
The route will has been extended to run from the National Heritage Museum (33 Marrett Road) to
Hartwell Tavern within the Minute Man National Historical Park. Seven of the 13 stops fall
within the Historic District. Six of those stops will be in the same exact location as last year; the
seventh stop will be at the MBTA bus stop at 1666 Massachusetts Avenue, replacing the stop at
the Battle Green Inn which posed traffic safety issues last year.
The Department of Public Works will be responsible for the sign installation. We are asking
permission to have the signs displayed at the locations pictured below:
1. Munroe Tavern — mounted to pine tree (as last year)
Lexington Center — at 1666 Massachusetts Avenue MBTA Bus Stop on telephone
pole. (New)
3. Depot Square — at MBTA Bus stop on metal post
4. Lexington Visitors Center/Buckman Tavern — on metal post
5. Hancock - Clarke House — on telephone pole at corner of Hancock and Edgewood
6. Battle Green — at seasonal bus stop aside Monument on metal pole
7. Old Belfry — on metal pole
